Michelle Obama on 2016 election: 'What is going on in our heads where we let that happen?'

Source: The HILL

.
Michelle Obama said Saturday that she is still reflecting on the outcome of the 2016 presidential election, asking how "we let that happen."

The former first lady appeared as the keynote speaker at the United State of Women Summit in Los Angeles, where she spoke about how to reflect on standards for women following Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's failed presidential bid.

"In light of this last election, I'm concerned about us as women and how we think," she said at the event. "What is going on in our heads where we let that happen, you know?"

In the 2016 election, 54 percent of women voted for Clinton, though that figure was sharply divided by race.

2. What happened was f**king comey. We were ahead in most polls by 4-5% until Comey sent the letter to

the republicans 11 days before the election, and the media then proceeded to parade every republican politician across the television screens spewing that the e-mail investigation had been reopened, for days.

That 4-5% lead disappeared almost immediately over night.

It was a collaborate effort between the FBI, the media, those self-identified progressives who refused to vote for the Democratic nominee by either voting third party or not voting, along with outside interference to undermine, distort, lie, and misrepresent things.

Every Democrat running for Senate in those critical swing states lost to the establishment, incumbent, republican, and those Democrats such as Russ Feingold were progressive by any standard.

This country voted for a racist, sexist, bigot, who nominated or appointed people to offices and departments that would roll back civil rights, workers rights, women's rights, the environment, education, etc. etc. etc.

and the same people who directed us to invade Iraq based on a LIE, create the economic collapse that almost brought our country into another great depression, are now following the same path they followed previously

a magnificent fight -- but only those who fought. Some failed. Why? What went on in "their heads" that looked at what had taken over the right and didn't rush, frantically, to stop it?

5. They felt that Trump was so far behind they allowed themselves the luxury of not voting...

and the base privilege of a protest not voting for Hillary. I learned the hard lesson of not voting in 2000. Hopefully they learned theirs in 2016.

7. Guess so, and apparently took a mental vacation

in the last three weeks as the polls started bouncing like ping-pong balls, responding to FBI actions and blizzards of social media lies from two continents. Research indicates most people make up their minds around early summer or so, so perhaps it was a prolonged vacation?

Partisanship? Definitely a double-edged sword. Like the religious beliefs it has a lot in common with, in small doses it can help strengthen conviction and focus in a complex world and make us better, more involved citizens. It can also very quickly get out of control, strengthening what is worst in us, and be used like a ring in our noses to lead us down paths we'd never have chosen before.

Vulnerability to brainwashing with lies? Sigh.

Fatal levels of other cluelessness? Not managing to see or hold onto the big picture, its principles and goals, and thus easily distracted/mislead by frivolities? Voting third party or not voting to spite people who diss their opinions on a social media forum? Just last night someone talking about the partisan squabbling here on DU threatened losing "potentially Democratic constituencies." (God!!!)

As Michelle says, "'What is going on in our heads where we let that happen?'

It was a Perfect Shit-Storm of things: Comey; relentless right-wing attacks on Hillary and not much pushback from Dems; voter suppression tactics in a lot of states; "conventional wisdom" that declared that she couldn't lose, so voting for a third party or not voting at all wouldn't hurt anything; The HRC campaign's reluctance to go into Wisconsin, and probably 5 more things. It's still unbelievable to me that this country elected that clown.
