GOP Rep. Mo Brooks: Erosion to Blame for Rising Sea Levels
Source: The Daily Beast
Republicans on the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology voiced their skepticism during a Wednesday hearing about evidence suggesting sea levels are rising as a result of climate change, according to Science. Reps. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) and Lamar Smith (R-TX) both expressed doubt that climate change is a real phenomenon, saying that the committee should all be open to different points of view and that it needed to acknowledge the uncertainties that exist. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) then expressed concerns about data being presented to the committee about rising sea levels. He suggested that the rise in sea levels was due to land erosion making the sea floor rise. Every time you have that soil or rock or whatever it is that is deposited into the seas, that forces the sea levels to rise, he said. Because now you have less space in those oceans, because the bottom is moving up. Philip Duffy, former senior adviser to the U.S. Global Change Research Program, responded to Brooks that rocks or soil would have minuscule effects. This comes as April 2018 was just named the third-hottest April in recorded history.

Mo Brooks: Soil Or Rock Or Whatever Falling Into Ocean Causes Sea Level Rise
By Nicole Lafond | May 17, 2018 12:56 pm
Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) on Wednesday claimed that falling rock or whatever is contributing to rising sea-levels and that global warming was actually causing the Antarctic ice sheets to grow, not shrink, trade publication E&E News reported.
During a hearing before the House Science, Space and Technology Committee on how technology can be used to address global warming, Brooks tried to convince Philip Duffy, the president of the Woods Hole Research Center and a former senior adviser to the Global Change Research Program, that soil and rocks falling into the ocean off of cliffs along the coast of California was causing sea levels to rise. He also argued that sedimentary and silt from large rivers, like the Mississippi, were contributing to the problem.
Every time you have that soil or rock or whatever it is that is deposited into the seas, that forces the sea levels to rise, because now you have less space in those oceans, because the bottom is moving up, Brooks said, according to the report.
Duffy said that the impact of rocks falling into the ocean was causing minuscule effects when assessed on human time scales.
Brooks then argued that ice sheets in the Antarctic are growing, not shrinking, which, according to E&E News, was accurate a few years ago, but is not relevant to the global warming debate because different factors affect the Arctic and Antarctic rates of melting. Duffy told Brooks that he had satellite records that show an acceleration of the shrinkage of the Antarctic ice sheet.

These morons should all be run out of Congress on a rail, but sadly, much of this country is too stupid and brainwashed to know that or recognize it.

(347 posts)I may be causing sea level rise.
I live in rural Virginia on the Chesapeake Bay. From time to time (well, okay, damn near every day when the weather cooperates) I sit on the end of my dock around sunset sipping gin and tonic. And from time to time (well, okay, damn near all the time) I go to the end of the dock and piss in the Bay.
And my neighbor, Crazy Don?? He knocks back Corona by the case on the end of his dock and when he pisses in the Bay, he PISSES in the Bay . . . I mean, it's a thing of beauty!!!
We must be causing sea level rise . . . you think??
