The president of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, has ordered the withdrawal of additional security assigned to the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has remained for almost six years.
The move was announced a day after an investigation by the Guardian and Focus Ecuador revealed the country had bankrolled a multimillion-dollar spy operation to protect and support Assange, employing an international security company and undercover agents to monitor his visitors, embassy staff and even the British police.
Over more than five years, Ecuador put at least $5m (£3.7m) into a secret intelligence budget that protected him while he had visits from Nigel Farage, members of European nationalist groups and individuals linked to the Kremlin.
Rafael Correa, the then Ecuadorian president who approved of the operation, later defended the security measures as routine and modest.

Just say, "Son, this hurts me more than it does you, your mother and I believed you when you said maybe a couple of months. Its time to spread your wings, little bird!"
Its not as if cheetolini would have him arrested. He'd make a fortune on the GOP/Alt-Right rubber chicken circuit. Maybe then some of our deluded left brothers and sisters will finally get it. Julian Assange is Dennis Miller's even creepier less funny little brother.
Do the Brits really have any charges on him anymore? He's been practically in jail the last six years.

(6,831 posts)They are just waiting for him to put one toe outside. He refused to uphold his end of a legal order. Over there, a lawbreaker is a lawbreaker. Statute of limitations is more of an american legal concept. He flaunted the law and they want him. Badly. He also knows that when he does leave there, authorities will know it immediately as there is not one square millimeter of London that doesn't have CCTV. And they monitor all of the entrances to the embassy. Once nabbed, they WILL extradite him to the states. And he knows this.
What surprises me is why Ecuador allows this charade to continue. What is in this for them ? At one time, early on, they looked like a defender of freedom, but this has caused them one diplomatic embarrassment after another, not to mention the cost, and the staff at the embassy have a visceral hatred of him. He lives like a pig, refuses to engage in personal hygiene (of any kind), and is rude and abusive to staff. So why do they allow him to stay ?
