'Trump's son should be concerned': Wiretaps show Trump Jr. met with Putin ally

The FBI has obtained secret wiretaps collected by Spanish police of conversations involving Alexander Torshin, a deputy governor of Russias Central Bank who has forged close ties with U.S. lawmakers and the National Rifle Association, that led to a meeting with Donald Trump Jr. during the gun lobbys annual convention in Louisville in May, 2016, a top Spanish prosecutor said Friday.
Jose Grinda, who has spearheaded investigations into Spanish organized crime said that bureau officials in recent months requested and were provided transcripts of wiretapped conversations between Torshin and Alexander Romanov, a convicted Russian money launderer. On the wiretaps, Romanov refers to Torshin as El Padrino, his godfather.
Just a few months ago, the wiretaps of these telephone conversations were given to the FBI, Grinda said in response to a question from Yahoo News during a talk he gave at the Hudson Institute, a conservative think tank in Washington. Asked if he was concerned about Torshins meetings with Donald Trump Jr. and other American political figures, Grinda replied: Mr. Trumps son should be concerned.
The comments by Grinda were the first clear sign that the FBI may be investigating Torshin, possibly as a part of special counsel Robert Muellers probe into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Torshin a close political ally of Vladimir Putin had multiple contacts with conservative activists in the United States during the election, seeking to set up a summit between the Russian president and then-candidate Trump. Although the summit never transpired, Torshin did meet briefly with the presidents son at a private dinner in Louisville during the May 2016 annual convention of the NRA. A member of the NRA since 2012, Torshin has been a regular attendee of the groups conventions in recent years and hosted senior members of the group in Moscow.

(3,433 posts)As an American trade association, what objective business might the NRA have in Russia? Why might they have a need to travel to Moscow? I'm trying to see it through the NRA's eyes. I can't image that this started as an effort to expand into Russia, but I also can't imagine it was originally an effort to launder Russian money into US politics either.
That seems like where it might have veered over time.

(15,250 posts)All of the people that we know who are involved are obsessed with money and power.
And I'm sure there was some careful analysis by the plotters within and outside of the US to find conduits that could be used to channel money.
Real-estate is of course primary. Membership organizations (NRA/PACs) are good. Trusts and other multi-layered corps work.
I'd really like to have the problem of where to stuff an extra $1M without it being detected. I like a firm mattress.

(1,474 posts)Thanks Judi Lynn! The traitorous trump mafia is being exposed as the organized crime family they are. After eight years of an honest and intelligent black president, racists and bigots elected trump. They must be so proud. Not to mention stupid and hateful. My God, how could we let this happen in America? And it is not just trump. The entire gop is complicit. So much smoke and so many Americans bitch about unpatriotic kneeling while hating minorities more than they value America.

So, from a Trump point of view, no harm done.

Plus, the attacks on our spooks have probably pissed off a lot of their international contacts who would be happy to help fry OrangeTurd.
Hopefully this is just the beginning of the information we get from friendly intelligence services.
