Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani said on Sunday that his repeated imputations of a supposed scandal at the heart of the Robert Mueller investigation which Donald Trump calls Spygate amounted to a tactic to sway public opinion and limit the risk of the president being impeached.
Of course we have to do it to defend the president, Trumps lawyer told CNN State of the Union host Dana Bash, who accused him of being part of a campaign to undermine the Mueller investigation. Trump has repeatedly called the special counsels work a witch hunt, despite its producing five guilty pleas, including by three former Trump aides, and evidence of Russian tampering in US elections.
It is for public opinion, Giuliani said of his public campaign of dissimulation. Because eventually the decision here is going to be impeach or not impeach. Members of Congress, Democrats and Republicans, are going to be informed a lot by their constituents. And so our jury and it should be is the American people.
So Republicans largely, many independents, even some Democrats now question the legitimacy of [the Mueller investigation], Giuliani said. Democrats I would suggest for their own self-interest, this is not a good issue to go into the midterms.

Trump thinks he has a PR problem, and it can be solved with marketing savvy. Like Trump University, Trump Steaks, yada yada

(9,426 posts)it should be noted. Does Rudy know that "constituents" ARE "American public"?? Love the way his eyes pop out of his head, as though someone touched him with a cattle prod.

(17,387 posts)Given the success of 2016, watch the rise of pro-Trump progressives attacking Dems as part of a neoliberal deepstate conspiracy.

(32,634 posts)... it will be Russian bots disguising themselves as "progressive pro-Trump" Democrats. In other words, trolls.
If we can't check the credentials of a "pro-Trump" poster on DU we should be highly skeptical of any such comments.

(17,387 posts)In 2016, a lot of DUers posted a cited to the Sane Progressive who repeatedly attacked Dems as neoliberals. Now that Trump has won, has she said squat about him?
No. Instead, she is Now defending Trump and now attacking the Deep State and, of course, Dems.
The point is that even the left can fall for such propaganda campaigns. That is why you have to be careful about threads attacking Dems and giving Republicans a free pass.

(12,608 posts)so he is admitting that 'Spygate' is just rhetoric propaganda to discredit Mueller and that it is not real

(1,822 posts)and he's not even clever since "spygate" was the Patriots scandal for taping an opponents practice before the Super Bowl back 10 years ago.

(18,624 posts)...but when I read the actual quotes, he does indeed admit to using propaganda to sway public opinion.
Now I'm no fancy pants New York attorney, but it doesn't seem smart to me to tell people that. Sure, Trump die hards will swallow it readily, but that could prove embarrassing eventually.
Regardless, I don't think Rudy's going to get many high end contracts after this.

(7,947 posts)He said he wasn't comfortable with an interview addressing obstruction because the President could be implicated over an interpretation of a comment he made about firing Comey.
"If you interpret his comment about firing ... Comey ... If you interpret that as obstructing the investigation, as opposed to removing a guy who was doing a bad job, on the recommendation, in part, of (Deputy Attorney General Rod) Rosenstein, but you see it as obstructing the investigation, then you can say it is obstruction," Giuliani told CNN. "And then you can say it is perjury, which is even easier for them, which is where I think, if they are sneaky, they are going."
So-- he's admitting the "comment" (presumably to Lester Holt) was obstructing. And then it's also perjury.
This is Trump's DEFENSE attorney?
