New elections loom in Italy amid calls for Mattarella to be impeached

Source: The Guardian

A standoff over Italy’s future in the eurozone has forced the resignation of the populist prime minister-in waiting, Giuseppe Conte, after the country’s president refused to accept Conte’s controversial choice for finance minister.

Sergio Mattarella, the Italian president who was installed by a previous pro-EU government, refused to accept the nomination for finance minister of Paolo Savona, an 81-year-old former industry minister who has called Italy’s entry into the euro a “historic mistake”.
...
The leaders of MS5 and Lega, Luigi Di Maio and Matteo Salvini, denounced the veto, decrying what they called meddling by Germany, ratings agencies and financial lobbies. Di Maio also called for Mattarella to be impeached.
...
“I hope that we can give the floor to Italians as soon as possible, but first we need to clear things up. First the impeachment of Mattarella ... then to the polls,” he said.

Apparently the President is pro-EU while the Prime Minister is anti-EU. Well they should settle that by referendum with all the voters of Italy, not just 2 guys.

Make sure the Russians stay away from this or it will become a total shitshow like our 2016 election.

The Russian are totally trying to disrupt the EU zone.

But there is a fear among Italian, European and American officials that Russia is also using the same kind of behind-the-scenes influence and news media obfuscation it has employed in the United States and elsewhere, creating a tilt in Italy toward Moscow.

Former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi complained privately to his counterparts about Russian meddling in his country’s politics by supporting anti-establishment parties. And websites controlled by a leader of the Five Star Movement, one of Italy’s most popular anti-establishment parties, have spread reports published on Sputnik Italia, an Italian version of the Russian state-funded news operation.

I read this similar article in the international New York Times in March of this year in Italy on vacation.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella has asked an ex-IMF economist to form a government as the country faces fresh political turmoil.

Carlo Cottarelli became known as "Mr Scissors" for his cuts to public spending in Italy.

His appointment came after efforts by Italy's two populist parties to form a coalition government collapsed.

But the move is a temporary measure and the PM-in-waiting says he will hold new elections by early next year.
