The government of Mexico announced on Thursday it would implement new duties on various U.S. products in response to President Trump's decision to levy steel and aluminum tariffs on the country.
"Mexico reiterates its position against protectionist measures that affect and distort international commerce in goods," the government said in a statement.
"In response to the tariffs imposed by the United States, Mexico will impose equivalent measures to various products like flat steels (hot and cold foil, including coated and various tubes), lamps, legs and shoulders of pork, sausages and food preparations, apples, grapes, blueberries, various cheeses, among others, up to an amount comparable to the level of affectation"

(753 posts)I guess countries that have freedom do not work for him. At this point Mexico and Canada might as well make their NAFTA.

(6,206 posts)trump thinks by doing this it will mean folks here in the US will produce/grow these products. We have let a lot of what we use to do go away big time. Thanks to trump a depression is moving our way and the Dems will have to fix it again.

(21,859 posts)Single handedly is wiping out years of tedious, hard built economic recovery after the great depression of 2008. Banks are now free to do what brought this whole mess on in 2008 (for the most part).
Interest rates will continue to rise, economic activity will slow at the borders, and everything is going to go up (cost more for all of us), the dollar is going down in value, and relations w/ our own allies is going to pot.
What a dumkoff!! (spelling? eh...I'll leave, you get the point.
Someone (e.g. CONGRESS! needs to step in and do their job and remove RUMP before he does permanent damage).

(2,396 posts)blah blah blah on goods deemed critical to national security. Ross says a strong economy is critical to national security.
They're just pulling it out of their ass at this point.
I say Viva Mexico!
Since when do we beat up on our allies
I think trumpy bear did this to get even for Mexico reiterating that they won't pay for his border wall.

(6,341 posts)...that his support among farmers will remain. They think the initial pain they feel will only be temporary. And 'mericans will start buying their crops since Mexican crops are too expensive. Or Mexico will come back and capitulate that give 'merican farmers a better deal.
Their concept of economics and trade is barely one dimensional....and they think THAT is common sense.

(2,396 posts)I then turned out reading various agricultural associations sites and the boards are none to happy, anyway.
One farmer cancelled his $71k silo purchase order since it went up 5% in one day.
The article went on to point out that buying of farm equipment will be put off as well as expanding their plantings.

(177 posts)but Mexico's response seems a bit suspicious to me, especially in comparison to the manner in which China seemed to target Trump voters for their retaliation. The agricultural products listed above are predominantly produced in blue states. What gives? Is this a soft retaliation as negotiating tactic by Mexico? Do they just naturally import more from northeastern/northwestern locales for climate reasons?
