Samantha Bee apologizes for vulgar remark about Ivanka Trump: 'I crossed a line'

Source: CNN

Samantha Bee has apologized for calling White House senior adviser and first daughter Ivanka Trump a "feckless c***" on her TBS show Thursday.

"I would like to sincerely apologize to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night. It was inappropriate and inexcusable. I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it," Bee said in a statement.

...

Bee's network added in a statement of its own that the host took "the right action in apologizing for the vile and inappropriate language."

"Those words should not have been aired," TBS said. "It was our mistake too, and we regret it."

The clip of Bee making the remark has since been pulled from YouTube and Twitter.

Roseanne was and is a racist and conspiracy monger and has used her show as propaganda for her crazy "Alex Jones" attitude. Kathy Griffin and Sam Bee are also comedians but there is a difference. They aren't racists and RW nut jobs, Roseanne is. She has used her platform to promote her and the moron's hate filled prejudices. Kathy and Sam are like the comedian at the W House Correspondents Dinner, Michelle Wolfe. This is like comparing apples and oranges which the GOP spin machine will use twist to suit their agenda. His base will eat it up.

Not AS bad, but it's similar. It has no place in public, whether in a joke or political discussions. She should suffer some consequences, but I don't think should be fired. A fine, maybe, if her employment contract allows for that.

I give professional comedians wide latitude to make mistakes because their job involves going to the edge, pushing the envelope. Sometimes they're bound to cross the line. Bee was in a standup routine.

Roseanne...totally different. Her tweet was a whistle call to white supremacists everywhere, using the comparison to that animal, which dates back to beginnings of the KKK to dehumanize blacks. She also typed it, so had a little more time to think about it, than when it spills out of your mouth in a standup routine. She'd also done a similar thing to Susan Rice. So Roseanne knew what she was doing.

What happened to “When they go low, we go high!”? Valerie Jarret was right on when she described the vulgar Rosanne comment as a “teachable moment”. What Samantha Bee said was so offensive as to be indefensible. If we are to hold ourselves up to higher ideals than the Trump crowd, she needs to go.

This issue does not, of course, because liberals are honest and decent and while liberals dont seek the use of the word, given the target the word itself is the LAST thing anyone should care about.

The purist attitude, that "liberals" are supposed to have, and we're supposed to be better than everyone else. It led to our downfall with Hillary (that and the Russian thing), and the ousting of Franklin. Well I'm sorry, but if name-calling is what the RW wants, then that's what they're gonna get. And, people have been calling male figures "dicks" for years and years, and I see no outrage. So when it's appropriate, the c-word is gonna get used. I have no problem with Samantha Bee, she just speaks the truth.

Obviously they have absolutely no issues with that word on their network, and no FCC issues (wbich still ruled in Colbert's favor for his homophobic rant about Trump and Putin).

Actually, could be a better career move.

The reason why this *is* slightly different from recent events is 1) Bee doesn't have a history of advocating for misogyny and 2) Bee is certainly aware of the impact of the word from her own experiences having it directed at her so while yes she should have known better, I'm actually more offended by the rest of the monologue -- the suggestion Ivanka use the totally pervy vibe he has demonstrated towards her to influence him.

Obviously shock value humor is Bee's gig -- but some things aren't funny. Misogynistic insults aren't funny even if it's the one word in the English language that still has the power to shock all of America in every context. Incest jokes are not only not funny but just fucking sick, I really actually feel sorry for Ivanka having to deal with a Dad that says that type of thing and a media that thinks it's funny rather than sick.

Jun 2018

Samantha Bee was so bothered by the lack of response after Hurricaine Maria that she dedicated an entire episode of her show about it, actually going down there and talking with the people there. But when the news comes out about how many people (US citizens) died and how much the govt underreported it, all the media could talk about was Rosanne's tweet and Samantha Bee's use of the 'c' word. For that, she should be especially ashamed.

The MSM has blood on its hands.

It seems there may be more profit in amplifying controversies over false equivalencies of language versus deaths of (mostly) people of color.

A tweeter reposted on DU made the excellent point that Bee used misogynistic language AGAINST a misogynistic racist regime and Barr used racist language to SUPPORT a misogynistic racist regime.

There is no equivalency.

We're dealing with people who have no standards and no decency, and who are utterly without shame. As someone upthread pointed out, Ted Nugent called HRC the same thing and still got an invite to the White House.

The question I would ask is "Do we really want to be like these people?" When Ted Nugent said that, every person of conscience was outraged, and rightly so. That's the most offensive thing a woman can be called, and it's never appropriate. I don't care who it's aimed at.

Either standards of decency and propriety matter... or they don't. If something is wrong, it's wrong. Full stop. Just because so-and-so did it first doesn't make it acceptable for someone else to do it. That's a childish defense. I feel that giving one's own side a pass while condemning the other side is hypocrisy, pure and simple.

I also feel that hypocrisy and the utter lack of standards and decency should be left in the GOP playbook. I'm not willing to become a monster in order to win against monsters. Politics is one of those slippery games where principles gradually shift and start to erode, but if we're willing to compromise any and all principles in the pursuit of victory, then how does that make us any better than our opponents?

I think that Samantha Bee should resign. If she were a conservative commentator, everyone here would be demanding her head on a platter before close of business. If the standard doesn't apply to her, then why should it apply to the next conservative who uses a misogynistic slur?

and the Roseanne episode is that comedians start getting the idea that they are too cool for school and start thinking it is OK for them to talk this way. I think both women have to know that what they said is not generally accepted as appropriate public talk. Likening someone to an ape? Calling someone, anyone, a c--- in public? Not generally accepted. But they thought they had a pass because they generally get away with potty-mouth-in-public and lost sight of the fact that even they have a line.

Samantha Bee, whom I think is sometimes hilariously funny, does say some things that I consider over the top, inappropriate, and very unfunny. And frankly unnecessary to her comedy.

Unfortunately ABC has set the bar for a response to this kind of behavior. The question is: does calling a woman a c*nt equal calling a black woman an ape?

I want the answer to be "no," but I'm not so sure. I hope Sam doesn't lose her show over this one. Comedians have been punished before -- Bill Maher comes to mind -- so I'm taking a wait-and-see position with my fingers crossed.

To me common usage of these terms confers huge differences.

Many people behave like c*nts, assholes, dicks. As a woman I dislike and don't use this particular vulgarity, but the world's full of them and sometimes I smile and agree with comments that do. When used hatefully to demean women as women, it is very similar to the other in ugliness, but it was not used that way by Bee.

But the other is always intensely hate-ful, never just a vulgarity. It's a factory-level dog whistle that, as intended, immediately identifies the user as on the ugly, aggressively hateful side of a very strong line.
