MSNBC host Joy Reid faces new questions about her old blog
Source: Washington Post
NBC News remained silent on Wednesday about MSNBC host Joy Reid amid new revelations that she once wrote blog posts raising questions about the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that echo truther conspiracy theories.
Reid a liberal commentator who has been under fire for homophobic comments that have been found on her now-defunct blog promoted a 9/11 film co-produced by Alex Jones, the far-right media figure who has touted numerous conspiracy theories on his Infowars website and radio program.
Reid has previously claimed her blog was hacked and that she was unaware that the anti-gay comments had been inserted under her name long after she had stopped writing it. MSNBC has stood by her pending an FBI investigation. The bizarre allegations have raised questions about Reids honesty and integrity.

(37,648 posts)and I don't think she's a big enough fish to be targeted by experts. Although maybe some amateurs are trying out something to use on one of the big ratings MSNBC hosts. Apparently she did say some things on her blog back in the day, so it's not like this is totally created from nothing. This is different than Franken's situation, who was both in the way of people with Presidential aspirations AND was a biggie Senator who was one of the most successful in questioning Sessions & others in hearings AND in articulating to the public what's going on.
The FBI is investigating, isn't it? So we'll see what it says.
Eliot Rosewater
(31,109 posts)Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)they were investigating whether someone hacked her blog. She & MSNBC both wanted the investigation, I think.
The FBI investigation is mentioned again in the OP article. But I thought I'd read that the FBI couldn't find evidence of hacking. Maybe I'm misremembering, though.
Eliot Rosewater
(31,109 posts)Demsrule86
(68,556 posts)as well. Why should the FBI investigate whether 9-11 was a conspiracy post...lots of folks including my own husband questioned this. My theory is there are few conspiracies because people can't keep quiet about it...so I tend to ignore such things.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)That's what I recall reading at the time. So you have to ask them whether they should have asked the FBI to do that. I suppose hacking of a talk show host falls w/in the FBI's realm of responsibility.
Questioned what?
This wasn't a conspiracy post being investigated. It's the hacking that is or was investigated. I guess she's saying that she didn't push that Alex Jones 911 conspiracy video or whatever it was so must have been hacked. I guess.
Reid won an award or something, but she's not one of the high ratings hosts. She's not a biggie among the biggies at MSNBC. The biggies are Maddow, McDonnell, Matthews, Ari, MJ show.

(7,528 posts)And I'm with her as she is now, not as she was then. People are allowed to evolve and change, and if they're not given the opportunity to do that, there would be no reason to ever re-evaluate one's beliefs. Continuously holding fast to beliefs in the face of opposing facts is the modus operandi of the rightwing.
Stellar
(5,644 posts)I will be watching Joy and listening to her podcast until they snatch her from the airwaves. She's great!
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)I haven't seen her old blog or posts, so I can't really say how important they are.
She seems to have a following, but technically speaking, her ratings don't compare with several others at MSNBC, so she wouldn't be considered one of the biggest talk show hosts at the network. I don't know when her show is on....on the weekend, I think I read?
She doesn't pose much risk to the right, because she's not high profile enough, compared with Joe Scarborough, Maddow, Ari, and Matthews...also O'Donnell. That's no diss to anyone who is not one of those, but those are the ones that are highest profile, in prime time, and have the highest consistent ratings. Those prime timers would be the ones the right would target, IMO. Like if liberals were to go after individuals at Fox, they'd go first at Hannity...people like that.
I'm sure Joy is great. I just haven't seen her show, so she comes on at a time I don't watch the station. She did win an award, I read. So kudos for that.

--Whatabout ABC re-hiring keith Olbermann who called Trump a Nazi?

Even when the whole shit show comes falling down eventually they will have excuses for defending treasonous acts that have been proven with FACTS from an investigation. There is no hope for them. They have deep sociological and religious issues that have been going on for 40+ years. They are the perfect audience for anyone to deceive, Putin was not "smart" to target them and their weaknesses with his propaganda. The same goes with Fux Ruse. They fired Melissa Harris-Perry for talking too much about African Americans, and fired Ed Schultz for being too pro union. And then, as if needing to prove their idiocy even more, they hired Megyn Kelly and Greta Van Susteren to chase after those mythical 'centrists.'
Joy Reid is so good at her job, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to find that they are people at NBC just looking for an excuse to trash her.

(3,185 posts)If she legit said those things, then she should cop to it, explain that her views have evolved since that time, and apologize for having said it. She did apologize, but then she backtracked and said she was hacked. To the best of my knowledge, no conclusive proof of hacking was ever presented.
So now on top of having said the wrong things (a long time ago, 'tis true) she's potentially lied in an attempt to avoid culpability. I can absolutely forgive someone for having less progressive views in the past, because we can all change and grow. I have a harder time forgiving lies.
azureblue
(2,146 posts)if and when you jump to conclusions and spread half truths? If this turns out to be yet another smear, will you write to her and apologize?
Jedi Guy
(3,185 posts)I said she's potentially lied about being hacked. She has put forward no proof (again, that I am aware of) to substantiate her claims of being hacked. She made the claim, so the onus is on her to prove it.
Again, her past views (if indeed she was not hacked) are absolutely forgivable. People do learn, grow, and change. If she'd let the matter rest with her initial apology, I doubt any more would have been said on the matter. When she backtracked and claimed to be the victim of hacking, she complicated the matter with an unproven claim. If she has proof, why hasn't she shown it to date?
FreeState

(102,236 posts)the full truth. The 911 commission published their big report, but they did not address everything.
Alex Jones was always nutty, but 16 years ago, he was a whole lot less bizarre and off the rails then he is now, so maybe she commented on something that wasn't just totally tin foil hat.
Whatever. I'm done with the attacks on Joy. Show me something she is doing now or recently and maybe I'll listen.
PatSeg
(47,419 posts)I ran across Alex Jones and I didn't know anything about him. He definitely wasn't as nutty as he is now and many people had serious questions about 9/11 and the Bush administration. Alex Jones was critical of George Bush and Dick Cheney, so he had readers/listeners more on the left than the right. I spent very little time on his site, as he was looking for ways to charge people for his theories. Clearly he was more of a carnival barker or snake oil salesman, but he took advantage of a volatile time, when people weren't buying the official version of events.
It is very possible that Reid also was suspicious of the events of the day and ran into a less caffeinated version of Jones.
LiberalLovinLug
(14,173 posts)Especially when Dubya and Dick were caught in lies of monumental proportions themselves.
All she said, from the report, was:
The fundamental question is: do you believe the official story of 9/11? If you do, great. If you dont, then everything that happened after that is called into serious question. Even if youre agnostic, or you tend to believe that al-Qaida attacked the World Trade Center and Pentagon and that the government had no warning such a thing could happen, its worth taking a second look.
and
For that matter, why did any of the WTV [sic] buildings fall...? the blog says. Somehow I think it will be a generation before we get the full story on what happened on 9/11.
I'm sorry but there is STILL no concrete reasoning why those buildings fell like they fell, or why building 7 fell down also like a demolition blocks away. The building where 3000 to 4000 cases investigating Wall Street were destroyed conveniently. There are STILL unanswered questions. I don't get why simply having questions about it makes you crazy or unpatriotic or whatever the charges against her would be.
PatSeg
(47,419 posts)The questions she asked were very reasonable and shared by many at the time. A lot of questions still go unanswered and I have resigned myself to the fact, that they probably won't be answered in my lifetime. Meanwhile, we all have seen the repercussions of that day. We are seeing them still. Maybe history will paint a clearer picture, because the mainstream one is still unsatisfying, especially as we watch tyrant try to destroy our democracy.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)on the farther left and go right as they find their sweetest-spot market. I can just imagine you giving this carnival barker's wisdom the go-by.
As for Joy,... She was strictly extremely small potatoes in 2001, and until people hit the really big time I'm guessing they normally can get away with a lot of opportunistic behaviors. Like most, she probably used what was available, touched on touchy subjects, to spark interest in what she was putting out. From what you say, Alex Jones would have been disreputable but not enough yet to make reference to him what it would be today. There's no point, though, at which I would have recommended that film. I assume.
PatSeg
(47,419 posts)There are far more than I would have thought possible. Alex Jones is neither far right or far left, he is a peddler of extremist theories. The period following 9/11 must have been full of opportunities for carpetbagger types. Unfortunately a lot of them are still with us, selling whatever the market allows.
There was so much outrage in the early 2000s, starting with the presidential election, people were frantic for answers. After 9/11, it was considered unpatriotic to criticize the administration, so people had to look beyond the mainstream media to find answers. That is how many of us ended up on Democratic Underground. There were a lot of really good websites that popped up at the time. DU was the one I frequented the most.
There are people who will never question the official version of any story and the polar opposite, who will always see a conspiracy. People Alex Jones, Glenn Beck, and Rush Limbaugh were more than happy to accommodate the latter.
It certainly looks like someone(s) wants to take down Joy Reid. The standards are ridiculously high for anyone perceived as being on the left.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)constantly pried at between the black bloc of the party and the rest would widen a bit more. And even among others, it'd be one of many new wedges being created between those who accepted or approved and those who were outraged. However this started, for sure the opportunity is being exploited to the max.
I'm getting worried for Joy today. My standards are for honesty, decency and competence in general. I don't approve a lot of what's coming out from the past, but what she's producing now matters more.
But more and more keeps being reported by those Buzzfeed journalists because it's there to find. She handled it extremely definitively and competently initially, no one could have been more proactive or have better friends to speak up for her, but the Columbia Journalism Review is agreeing that the "issue" is morphing into one of trustworthiness.

(47,419 posts)We have a monster in the White House, who says and does outrageous things on a daily basis, as well as many republican politicians who lie and cheat and barely get a slap on the wrist. If a Democrat or liberal makes the smallest of mistakes, they get crucified, sometimes even if it isn't true.
Why is "trustworthiness" only an issue for those on the left? It is ridiculous and very frustrating. Just another stupid distraction and the media has lost its perspective. Everything is a scandal.

(47,419 posts)anti Trump republicans are fair game. It is pretty clear that these people believe in absolutely nothing. Maybe it was inevitable, being so many republican politicians have really been faking it for decades - small government, reduce the deficit, responsible spending, patriotism, pro veterans, pro family values, etc. When put to the test, most of them only cared about their corporate overlords, power, and greed. So many are finally showing their true colors, rotten to the core.

(58,785 posts)worth keeping? I remember back during the 1990s and early 2000s when moderate conservatives, those who didn't support the move to hard-core social and anti-government laissez-faire policy to serve the new ultrawealthy classes, were driven out of national politics. And no doubt state. Traditional conservatism itself was purged as an ideology. Survivors posing as moderate, like McCain and Collins, sold out long ago to keep their cushy jobs.
Sigh. Sean Hannity now says Joy's apology should be accepted and move on.

I suppose the problem with traditional moderate conservatives is republicans tend to be sheep and though they may have once believed what they said, they will follow the leader, even if it is off a cliff. Republicans' unwavering unity and their tendency to speak as one voice has been their strength politically, but I think it is about to be their downfall.

Franken had the unique quality of being able to crystallize issues in a such a clear way that those who don't follow political discourse as avidly as we do here in the DU forums could readily understand, and his accomplishing this invaluable service with a ton of common sense instead of resorting to dumbing down was exceptional.
