Senator denied entry into migrant detention facility, claims he saw kids caged in another

Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley tried to visit an immigration detention facility in Texas over the weekend, but was soon denied access into the building. This prompted questions about what's going on behind closed doors at some of the country's detention facilities amid concerns about the separation of children from their parents who have attempted to cross the border illegally.
Merkley live-streamed his arrival at a detention facility run by the Office of Refugee Resettlement in Brownsville, Texas on Sunday, which he said was housing children who had been separated from their families at the border. During Merkley's live stream, the senator introduced himself to guards outside the building, identifying himself as a member of Congress and asking for permission to enter. The windows at the facility appeared to be blacked out.
"I was barred entry," Merkley said. "Asked repeatedly to speak to a supervisor -- he finally came out and said he can't tell us anything. Police were called on us," he added in a tweet.
"I wanted to be able to visit the facility where apparently upwards of 1,000 children are being held in that massive building, a former Walmart, and the federal government, President Trump and team, Attorney General Sessions, Homeland Security, they do not want members of Congress or the public to know what's going on," Merkley later told CNN in a phone interview on Monday.

(38,445 posts)This cannot be described. Whoever ordered this, needs to be in jail... Remember: Trump didn't give a damn about people in Puerto Rico...So why should he give a damn about migrant children?...and in my opinion, Trump approved this.

(47,586 posts)This is as bad as the 19th century workhouses in England, where children were separated from their parents and in most cases never reunited. They often didn't even know when a family member died.
This kind of cruelty is unconscionable in a modern 1st world democracy.

Sometimes it feels like we are barely moving forward, sometimes even regressing.
In 19th century England, the poor were considered inherently inferior and they should be grateful for the charity of the more fortunate. Not terribly different from the attitude towards immigrants today, well at least immigrants of color.

(61,698 posts)The kids' faces can be obscured. But the public has the right to see how these kids are being taken care of since it is our tax dollars doing it.
How do they shower in a WalMart?
Are there enough toilets?
Are there enough small toilets for 3-5 year olds?
How many adults per child?
Who takes care of their laundry?
Is there a nurse on site?
How do they spend their day? Are they in a structured environment?
Then someone needs to ask Ivanka if she would like her kids to live like that.

(3,164 posts)To get everyone riled up, expecting to see kids in cages or whatever and then there actually being little or nothing to get outraged about.
That's the kind of thing I would do, if I were them: get everyone DEMANDING to see, and expecting to see some horror and then revealing a dozen or so kids in a decent facility- to discredit Sen Merkley and others. Not saying it's the case, but saying it's the sort of devious thing I would do if I were on their side. Make the opponent 'cry wolf' enough times and you can than do anything you damned well please.
