Police: Boy shoots his wrist with mom's gun as she drives

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) Police in Virginia say a 5-year-old boy shot himself in the wrist with his mother's gun while she was driving him to a doctor's appointment and talking on the phone.
Virginia State Police said in a statement it happened Tuesday morning on Interstate 64 in Hampton.
They said the boy unbuckled his child seat and pulled the gun from his mother's purse. The mother told investigators she was on the phone and unaware of her son's actions.
Police said the 28-year-old woman heard a loud bang and saw her son had shot himself. She drove him to an urgent care center and he was taken to a hospital. He's reported in stable condition

(9,266 posts)BACK SEAT. Good work Mom. Not to mention talking on cell phone while driving. Not to mention having a gun within your child's reach. Maybe they should take her child away from her.

Regardless, the mother didn't maintain positive control of her gun and she ought to be prohibited from possessing any in the future as she has proven herself to be a threat to the safety and lives of others.

(64,579 posts)a forward-facing child seat. Usually, they are facing backwards the first year. As they get bigger, they graduate from a car seat to a booster seat, but they are not supposed to ride upfront until they are much older. An airbag deploying in the front seat can seriously injure a kid or a 'tween.
The back seat is the safest place for them.
