Hundreds take to Charlottesville streets a year after far-right rally
Source: Reuters
Hundreds of students and left-wing activists took to the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday, as a rally to mark the anniversary of last years white nationalist gathering turned largely into an anti-police protest.
With chants like, Cops and Klan go hand in hand, the protesters criticisms of both police and the University of Virginia underscored the resentment that still exists a year after torch-bearing neo-Nazis marched through campus, shouting anti-Semitic messages and beating counterprotesters.
Several students said they were angry that the police response was far larger this year compared with last year, when people carrying tiki torches the white nationalist rally went mostly unchecked.
At one point on Saturday, dozens of officers in riot gear formed a line near where the rally was taking place, prompting many protesters to rush over yelling, Why are you in riot gear? We dont see no riot here.

(7,725 posts)that crowds are powerful just because they can and will, fill and overwhelm the streets. Unless the alt right bum rushes the protesters, we win. Overwhelming numbers...arriving earlier than them on the streets they are deemed to be "sharing". Then peaceably winning by looking good, having good messages, standing together, being prepared, and above all being proud and fearless. And allow yourself the victory bc you are doing it the right way. The whole world saw that demonstration, and lack of violence. Compare and contrast the opposition. Eww.Ugly, angry people out to break things they didn't work to create, and have no clue how to make better. Looks like we won that one in flying colors. There is such a contrast from well put together(?),/HAPPY protestors who look informed and can just walk shoulder to shoulder w people w the same views, and win the debate on social justice issues through overwhelming numbers. It's actually a fun thing to do and to look back on as putting some skin in the game. to each of us locally, get ready for our turn to shine. It's a labor of love really. It's Homefront Loyal Opposition to the alt-right wing of politics and social engineering.
+++Interesting side note... ANtifa carried a banner in the crowd and looked perfectly contented. A far cry from the "militia Brigade w all the gunnery. Groan.

(55,137 posts)I went to an anti-wall rally and the moron's cult was across the street wrapped in flags and taunting us with insults using their bullhorns and electric megaphones. The police the sheriff's and the SWAT team had tons of shields, weapons, helmets, ammunition, etc and they were all standing in rows, one behind the other and ALL of them faced US (the peaceful protesters)!

(1,303 posts)So all these decades as our press has labeled activists for education, human rights, access to healthcare in Mexico and central/south America, as 'left-wing', they were just regular citizens, wanting basic aspects of civilization for their children. Those idiot conservatives believing the press is against them and biased toward the left, are just ignorant sheep (sheoples).
