Americans Confused By Cloud Computing - 51% of people polled think the weather affects the cloud

Therefore... global warming has to be a concern.

yesterday, I heard some guy actually arguing the non-necessity of high school Algebra as a requirement. I couldn't believe it.

When the weather knocks down the pole carrying the internet or power cable to your house, it certainly has an effect on your cloud computing.

There's no clear explanation for what "the cloud" is. For some, it means nothing more than "remote storage". For others, it means highly redundant, with geographical separation and anycast/vmotion/other "move-the-failed-server-to-somewhere-else" strategies.

Granted, the cloud relation to weather seems kind of ridiculous, but I'm not at all surprised that people are confused by what actually does and does not constitute "the cloud".

And a majority of those who do, just for very basic things like email and facebook. The metaphor "cloud" wouldn't be that intuitive or obvious.

Especially considering the satellite internet connections that are actually affected by weather.
