Giuliani: 'Truth isn't truth'

Source: Politico

President Donald Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani on Sunday claimed "truth isn't truth" when trying to explain why the president should not testify for special counsel Robert Mueller for fear of being trapped into a lie that could lead to a perjury charge.

“When you tell me that, you know, he should testify because he’s going to tell the truth and he shouldn’t worry, well that’s so silly because it’s somebody’s version of the truth. Not the truth,” Giuliani told Chuck Todd on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday morning.

“Truth is truth,” Todd responded. “No, it isn’t truth,” Giuliani said. “Truth isn’t truth. The President of the United States says, “I didn’t …”

A startled Todd answered: “Truth isn’t truth?” Giuliani: “No, no.”

Rudy G is going Orwellian. He might as well say: “The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”

There is no truth. Better if he said "One person's truth is not another's truth" but if you listen to the context of the interview, that's what he meant. There are facts, infinite facts in fact, but facts only have meaning relative to the story they tell. The stories can be true or not.

What we call true is usually based on how facts fit a story or narrative we believe to be true. If we believe the set storyline is true. the facts fit in it are also true. In this case, the media pounced on a handy catchphrase and ran with it out of context.

In the context Guiliani was saying, "One person's truth is not another person's truth." That's pretty unarguably straightforward. The gotcha quote was the Twitterization. for lazy news to reaffirm the storyline he's a moron. May be he is. But this misconstrued quote is not a reason why. No need for me to make it more philosophical than that.

The routine is more obvious on right-wing media. But, in these partisan times, used as well on other sides. There are more than enough facts in the media these days but given very little thought. Information itself is not understanding. As the internet will attest. If anyone were really concerned about the truth, they wouldn't be wasting time with this petty nonsense. End of rant.

"Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns — the ones we don't know we don't know. And if one looks throughout the history of our country and other free countries, it is the latter category that tend to be the difficult ones."

" don't know what the facts are but somebody's certainly going to sit down with him and find out what he knows that they may not know, and make sure he knows what they know that he may not know, and that's a good thing.

truth whole truth nothing but

https://parade.com/86289/marilynvossavant/telling-the-truth-02/

Marilyn: I’ve been working in a legal environment for ten years. Believe it or not, most attorneys cannot explain the difference between “the truth,” “the whole truth,” and “nothing but the truth.” You once wrote a brilliant definition of what differentiates them, but I’ve been unable to locate it in your archives. Can you repeat it?
----------------------

Marilyn: When swearing in witnesses, court clerks ask them to promise to tell “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.” What is the difference between the three? And if there is none, why don’t they just ask witnesses to promise to be truthful?

Marilyn responds:

There’s a difference. And the truths are all stated explicitly because some people try to weasel out of promises while still insisting that they’ve kept them. First, witnesses are asked to tell “the truth.” This means that they must not lie in response to a question.

Second, they’re asked to tell “the whole truth.” This means something else. For example, if a governor says that “in my state, we’ve moved 17,000 people from welfare to work” and omits adding the fact that in his state, 25,000 other people moved from work to welfare at the same time, he has told “the truth” but he hasn’t told “the whole truth.” That is, the net effect was that 8,000 more people were on welfare, not 17,000 fewer.

Third, witnesses are asked to tell “nothing but the truth.” This is yet another concept. For example, if a person tells the truth in response to a question and then adds a lie, he or she has told “the truth” but he hasn’t told “nothing but the truth.” And although none of this will stop truly dishonest people, at least it gives us good ammunition to charge them with perjury.

Although moral relativism is a legitimate thing, they have always hated the idea--until it benefits their side. They've also injected religion because the so-called christianity of their imagination was absolute truth. NOW, they see grey areas?

Thank dog for the news about pastafarians not being allowed to wear calendars on their head when getting a license in the Netherlands. Now there's a truth we can all sink our teeth into.

43. What ghouliani is saying
Wed Aug 22, 2018, 06:01 AM
Aug 2018

Is true, they over and over again attack the truth and claim its a lie when they know that it is the truth but can't admit it without confessing to crimes. They have to lie or be in legal trouble, and now with this Cohen thing Cohen under oath admitted to his crimes, and who was involved , trump, and they'll do the same thing . Claim he's a serial liar, and diminish what he did, then refuse to allow trump to be put under oath for questioning. Everyone knows trump is a serial liar , and corrupt , and treasonous, and its catching up to him now. Justice will not be kind to these career criminals, and those in Congress who are corrupt, and criminal , and have helped trump and putin. Ghouliani will also end up in deep legal troubles before its all over with. So will another lawyer who's been backing him and speaking out. This is one of many cans of worms that'll be opened up against trump and all these criminals. I'd be pretty worried if I were any of them now, and their day is coming , maybe very soon. especially members of Congress who've taken a $1.00 from putin for themselves , or their campaigns. Mitch and Paul have to be having lots of sleepless nights now for what all they are involved in, and have done against this country. The longer this goes on (if he doesn't resign) the increased likely hood more will end up in prison.
