Over Labor Day weekend, a series of photos "job shaming" former "Cosby Show" actor Geoffrey Owens for working at a Trader Joe's grocery store, went viral and quickly sparked controversy. Now, Hollywood heavyweight Tyler Perry is weighing in.
The photos show Owens, sporting a red name tag on his company t-shirt, working the cash register at a New Jersey Trader Joe's. Karma Lawrence, the customer who snapped the photos, sent them to The Daily Mail, where they were promptly published under the headline, "From learning lines to serving the long line!"

And now, mere hours after Owens appeared on "Good Morning America" to offer his perspective on the public outcry, Tyler Perry has taken to Twitter with a job offer: "#GeoffreyOwens I'm about to start shooting OWN's number one drama next week! Come join us!!! I have so much respect for people who hustle between gigs. The measure of a true artist."

I don't get why so many people felt the need to look down on someone for WORKING. My God, the man was doing what many many actors and other entertainers have to do to survive.... WORKING.
Hell, after I graduated college with a chemical engineering degree I worked in a damned pizza store for nearly a year because I had the bad foresight to finish college in the middle of a recession.

(114,673 posts)Life is hard and not all of us get the silver platter.
It is nice, though that he's getting an acting opportunity, but the response to his working at Trader Joe's was just so ugly.

(701 posts)it seems like Americans hate themselves and seeing themselves in Owens tarnishes the image of royalty. We worship golden icons.

(7,964 posts)But aren't famous people allowed to quit the industry and live normal lives if they so choose?
Hollywood is full of people who were probably "in a movie once." There shouldn't be any shame about it. It's legit to change career mid-life.

(21,526 posts)teaches acting at schools and community colleges. He said he chose Trader Joe's because it afford him flexibility to do the teaching thing. He said he would not take an acting job if someone provided. He said, he would take all audition requests and now Tyler Perry gave him that. He's a class act (sic).
I believe in fate and things happen for a reason. The person had no business taking a picture of him while at work, but that ended up being good karma for him - yay!

(29,685 posts)I've worked at stores. I liked it. Somewhat active, and highly social. If you like people (I do) working at a store is a nice way to spend the day.

(22,220 posts)job shame - what kind of crap is that? I am surprised daily at how screwed up things are but this is really low. The only people who should be ashamed of their jobs are republican politicians.

(5,542 posts)Heck I've washed dishes, bused tables of dirty dishes, waited tables, but always worked even while pursuing a college degree. There is nothing wrong with someone willing to work, whatever the job. I applaud this man. He is a real role model.

(3,063 posts)but he already has a job (of his own, that he is making as good a life as most in this economy, nothing to be ashamed of ). Tyler Perry {should} already know who he is, could have been there for him long ago. But just like a politician he is running to the front of the parade for his own self aggrandizement . He won't be there when the spotlight fades, but maybe he can get a recurring role with the Kar-Douche-ians

(77,271 posts)He quit because he didn't want it to be a distraction at the store. So, no, he did not have a job. (Well, he was doing part time drama teaching at a small college.)
