Collins Won't Be Swayed By 'Bribe' To Vote Against Kavanaugh

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) said her vote on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh will not be influenced by activists who are raising $1.3 million to unseat her if she votes in favor of the Kavanaugh, who Democrats believe is hostile toward Roe v. Wade.
"I consider this quid pro quo fundraising to be equivalent of an attempt to bribe me to vote against Judge Kavanaugh," Collins told Newsmax on Monday.
Two progressive groups from her home state -- Maine People's Alliance and Mainers for Accountable Leadership -- have pledged to donate all the funds they raise toward whoever runs against Collins in 2020 if she helps confirm Kavanaugh.
While a Republican, Collins has been adamant that she would not vote for Kavanaugh if he was antagonistic toward the landmark abortion rights ruling, but has since said she believes Kavanaugh thinks it is "settled law."

So Collins all of the money that you got from factions that are trying to hurt your fellow Maine constituents and the people of this country, what do you exactly call that gambit, not a bribe....................and exactly what do you do with that money................since you support Citizens United......................
You do realize that this is not a quid pro quo....................they are raising money to find someone to run against you, if you support a Serial Liar to the bench, you do realize this don't you...................Brett Kavanaugh is a Serial LIAR and he perjured himself and that he will do something on the right to privacy, that he likes to inject himself into, did you not hear the testimony and evidence about the young woman down in Texas................it's about the rule of law and principles....................... .

When Kavanaugh is the deciding vote to roll back Roe v Wade, she will act so astonished and I hope karma will get her for this and she will feel the pain she's caused so many others.

(52,196 posts)even if you're a hard-right fanatic who thinks scalia wasn't nearly right-wing enough, kavanaugh does not belong on the supreme court.
there are plenty of extreme right-wingers who actually have some credentials and experience to be supreme court justices, even if i disagree strongly with their politics.
kavanaugh is just a partisan hack. he was chosen to corrupt the court, especially to protect donnie and the rest of the republicans and russians in their legal troubles.

In order for it to be a bribe, they would have to offering the money to HER to vote against him.
They're not.

(54,341 posts)Now she can look like a hero to the radical right by saying she chose "principle" rather than succumb the the "money threat."
That fact that showing bravery on her part would have meant voting against Kavanaugh can now be carpeted over with her phony "courage stance." I wish people with these schemes would think out their chess moves a few in advance before acting. Now she not only gives McTurtle what he wants (as she was probably intending to do all along), but gets to display her "courage and fortitude" in the process--things which she has not displayed much of at all, while hinting at them all along. But do not look for--at long last--a sense of decency. She remains a dogmatic Republican. The chances of her showing a streak of decency at this point is slim, and the money threat against her only provides her with an undeserved cover to do the opposite.

If she can't be motivated to vote against a perjured repuke operative for the sake of the greater good, she's worthless. This fundraising effort isn't a bribe, it's a goddamn promise to send her packing.

(10,115 posts)It is their wacky system to elect a Governor that got crazy clown Le Page elected. And Knox county where I live is a very liberal leaning county. And I know they were and are both Republicans but Maine did elect two women to the Senate at the same time.

(6,496 posts)I agree about the independent streak. Also, I disagree with the statement that Maine is like the Alabama of the North. You can't judge this place by the actions some of the politicians take. We also have King as senator who is pretty much like a democrat. Ever been to Portland, ME? Go there and then see how much like Alabama it is. What about issues like ranked choice voting and medical marijuana? Maine has been a leader in those issues. Also, Maine has pretty good voting policies. You can register to vote on election day. People in prison are allowed to vote. People care a lot about the public schools around here. Environmental policies like the clean water act originated from Maine politicians. Mainers care a lot about the environment. Every city I know of in Maine does no sort, curb side recycling. We've had bottle deposits to encourage recycling my whole life. They recently raised the age for smoking to 21 here. Not an issue that concerns me so much, but it shows how much they care about kids. Minimum wage is $10, which is better than a lot of states still. Maine minimum wage will be $11 in 2019 and then $12 in 2020. That's just off the top of my head.
Zing Zing Zingbah
(6,496 posts)Pretty much all the time. That's why we voted to change the voting method to ranked choice voting, but be aware that we can only use it in certain elections at this point. We can use it for general election us house and US senate races. It can be used for all primary races. We are still working on getting it so we can use ranked choice voting for general election Maine house, Maine senate, and governors race. So if we end up with the dumb ass Republican governor,it would be because we have two independents in the race besides the republican and the dem. Unfortunately, the independents usually spoil it for the dems. With the ranked choice system, the independents would not be spoilers anymore. No one could be elected without 50% of the vote. LePage never received 50% of the vote. Also, as far as republicans go, Collins is generally reasonable and that is the only reason we are even talking about her right now. It is because with her there is a possibility she can be swayed to vote with the dems and she has many times in the past.

(2,574 posts)Taking millions from the Kochs and the GOP pipeline of Putingarch cash, in Collins dark & twisted rationale that's not a bribe. But somehow amassing small donations from hundreds of thousands of people desperate to save women from the SCOTUS appointment of a vicious serial sexual abuser, forced birth slaver....that's considered a bribe?
Does Susan Collins have even a glimmer that her vicious response is an obscene insult to every voter who opposes this Krackpot, Kriminal, Kreep Kavanaugh, a raging insult actually to anyone who has ever sent a small donation in support of any candidate?
