Thom Tillis is a smart guy who understands data. He had a successful career as a high-powered management consultant before hitching a lightning-fast ride from Cornelius town commissioner to speaker of the N.C. House to U.S. senator.
So it was disappointing when Tillis, facing a competitive Senate primary in 2014, said climate change was not a fact. Tillis knew better, but such is the state of the Republican Party that even smart candidates like Tillis have to say such foolishness to win a primary.
Then in 2015, Tillis voted against an amendment that said human activity is contributing to climate change. And last year, Tillis urged President Trump to exit the Paris Agreement that called for international emissions reductions and was signed by 197 countries, including the United States.
Finally, Tillis has come clean. In a recent interview with Tim Boyum of Spectrum News, Tillis said, I think we have to come up with several strategies to recognize reality. That climate changes. Sometimes it changes just because it has over millennia, and other times it changes because of human factors. Tillis said he was influenced by the U.S. militarys concerns that climate change could lead to global instability and is a threat to national security.

(10,801 posts)All Thom Tellis sees is a cat4 hurricane barreling towards
his state.
And I'm sure he remembers how congress would not approve
hurricane relief to New Orleans after Katrina hit.
He's just posturing.

(3,192 posts)He's figured out which way the wind is blowing, but the ship sailed a long time ago, while he was sticking a wet finger in the air. He won't gain by this public embrace of fact. Not every voter is that dumb.
I cannot imagine anyone more loathsome than a man who has known, all along, that climate change is real, is caused by man, and is ruining the chance for our species to survive, but who pretended ignorance -- worse, took the side of ignorance, defended ignorance, for his own political profit. If there were a hell, there'd be a special deep, dark, hot place in hell for the likes of him.

(11,949 posts)And I had given up any Republican ever admitting climate change is real because they are so invested in the denial.
They seemingly painted themselves in a corner.
While the best alternative is voting them all out, they will never go away as a party. It would be good for America for them to find a way out of the quandary they have created.
What better way from republican to admit climate change is real then saying it is for the military and they are being patriotic.
I know, dishonest as all get out. But if that is the way we can get enough of them to address the problem I am all for it.

(2,343 posts)He's sucking up to the most people he can. To the deniers he'll just say 'we don't know how much people actually contribute' and let himself off the hook.
