News organizations were trying to vet the story for weeks (with the NYTimes reportedly contacting dozens of people). There's no way that word wouldn't get back to Kavanaugh's team

Not thinking “oh god, I feel terrible about the harm I’ve caused “ or even “I can’t believe al the harm I caused lol but “how can I corral my old friends into covering it up so i can get away with it and go on to be a powerful justice on Supreme Court”
