Rep. Pete DeGraaf: Being Impregnated During a Rape Is Just Like Getting a Flat Tire

Kansas Republican Rep. Pete DeGraaf of Kansas stuck the proverbial foot in his mouth last week when debating whether to cover abortions for pregnancies that are the result of rape. Peter Rugg of Pitch.com is reporting Kansas legislators approved a ban on insurance companies that offer abortion coverage as part of their general health plans last week. The one exception: when a woman's life is at risk.
DeGraaf, who is in his first term and is an associate pastor, also called for banning coverage for abortions of rape pregnancies. Women could get around this if they purchased separate, "abortion-only policies."
During the House discussion, there was predictably some disagreement over whether excluding rape pregnancies from coverage was perhaps the sort of callous treatment that a recently violated woman shouldn't have to deal with. Here's DeGraaf's response to Rep. Barbara Bollier's challenge, as reported by the McPherson Sentinel:
Rep. Pete DeGraaf, a Mulvane Republican who supports the bill, told her: "We do need to plan ahead, don't we, in life?"
Bollier asked him, "And so women need to plan ahead for issues that they have no control over with pregnancy?"
DeGraaf drew groans of protest from some House members when he responded, "I have a spare tire on my car."
"I also have life insurance," he added. "I have a lot of things that I plan ahead for."

Ladies make sure you always carry spares!! If we take this to its logical extreme, women should be prepared for rape just like a flat tire. Make sure you carry around extra condoms in your purse and ask the rapist to please use them so you won't get pregnant during a rape. I'm sure your courtesy will be appreciated by your rapist and he'll gallantly comply like the gentleman he is!! Because we all know how gentlemanly and courteous rapists are!
Just when I thought things couldn't get any stupider.....

(5,420 posts)as though it was consensual sex. Then it dawned on me; thats how all of their sexual encounters are. They think husbands have a right to force their wives into sex. Who would want to have consensual sex with these pigs? Their entire sex lives amount to molestation, sexual misconduct or rape.
Maybe thats why they just don't get it.

Property has no rights, cannot be assaulted. Can be bred.

If you can't get pregnant from a "legitimate" rape, where is he really going? Maybe women should carry hits of X so they can just enjoy the act, then accept the joyous gift from god - and that means they should also prepare for this gift by stocking up on diapers, clothes, etc. thereby consuming more and creating jobs! So a case can be made that rapists are job creators and are stimulating the economy!!
Hey, it's the same logic the Republicans are using!! (I don't need a sarcasm tag here, do I?)

I'd put a sarcasm tag, but then again, with the Pubbies, you never know........they might think it's a great idea you've got there!
If I were you, I'd be expecting a call from Karl Rove in the near future.

If they are lucky, the woman will bear multiples.

(19,458 posts)C'mon Kansas.. banning insurance companies that offer abortion coverage? Fuck you. Abortion is legal!! No women goes around hoping to be in that position, but things happen in life.. and last time I checked women did NOT get pregnant without the help of a man (unless it was a medical procedure, and even then a man had to provide something to make that happen.) But it's almost always the men that are deciding what happens with our bodies.
The flat tire comment is something I'd heard before from that crowd. Not shocking considering who said it. Who thought it was a good idea to elect an extremist pastor to office???

(15,882 posts)tire out on a dark highway. You are changing the tire when a complete stranger walks out of the dark and busts you up the side of the head with a hammer. When you try to rise, you are beaten down.
He may or may not have sex with you, he does with you what gives him a feeling of satisfaction. How would you suggest one "plan ahead" for this? He has hurt, thoroughly humiliated and degraded you, taken away a little bit of you, and you will never, ever get this repaired. You could tell others, but most really won't be able to do more than empathize. Some will even treat you harshly, like shaking someone's broken arm, only they are doing it to your spirit, knowingly or unwittingly. It hurts, even if you are strong enough, and not everyone is.
It doesn't matter if you are a woman, or a little boy, or anyone else.
Where do you buy insurance against that?

(6,241 posts)All of these 'gaffes' start to look like policy.
Every woman, no matter how old, should stock up on new born diapers. Just in case. Even if you aren't sexually active or have no intention of having kids. It's not really up to you at this point. You have no more control over your body or your life. The rapist will decide when you are ready to have kids. Then the politicians will decide that you are going to keep it. Good luck.

(17,505 posts).... Repug men know NOTHING about women or what their "strange (to them, obviously) lives" are like or entail. They have no knowledge or seem capable of any kind of empathy toward what a woman might experience in (I assume) ANY sexual situation. Rape is an inconvenience to women in their minds. They are almost like Victorian men-of-power with autism when it comes to the subject of women.... in general, and women and sex in particular.
These incomplete humans should obviously never make any kind of decisions concerning women's health... and probably ANYBODY'S health.... this much is evident.

Wow. This is a party with real problems with masculinity, particularly with a candidate who's looking to become a god after he dies and who'll spend eternity running celestial harems on various planets.

(4,523 posts)Pretty obvious why they think this way isn't it? I mean, it's ALWAYS blame the victim:
* you got raped - your fault you're a slut
* you lost your job - you're stupid, not my fault we outsourced it, etc
* you don't have health care - your fault for not having enough $ (see above)
* you can't (insert xxx here) - not my fault we took all the $$ for tax cuts and war
On and on and ON.
They support a lot of types of rape - not just the type we're talking here.....

In its most extreme form, this line of thinking would
ban all insurance of all kinds as SOCIALISM!!
And insurance did arise from the idea of helping one's
neighbor as he would help you in times of need.
Mutual insurance companies, get it?
Now it's all about profit, private property.

(25,111 posts)These fuckers blame anything on women. First off, rape is rape, and the degrees of rape overall is bullshit. Second, these "men" never take into content that the problem relies on the rapist themselves? Rapist from the get go do have emotional criminal tendencies and in many cases have sexual malfunctions, therefore, its not the wo-men who have the magical sperminator device, its the rapist themselves that can not ejaculate properly.
