Hillary Clinton: You 'cannot be civil' with Republicans, Democrats need to be 'tougher'

Source: USA Today

WASHINGTON – Hillary Clinton says the time for civility is over.

After the bitter and partisan fight over the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, the former secretary of State and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate declared that President Donald Trump has undermined the integrity of the nation's highest court and that it's time for Democrats to be "tougher" with their opponents, in an interview with CNN published Tuesday

"You cannot be civil with a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for, what you care about," Clinton told CNN's Christiane Amanpour. "That's why I believe, if we are fortunate enough to win back the House and or the Senate, that's when civility can start again."

Clinton said that Senate Republicans under Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., "demeaned the confirmation process" and "insulted and attacked" Christine Blasey Ford – who testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee about a sexual assault she alleges Kavanaugh committed in 1982 – along with other "women who were speaking out."

Clinton compared the handling of Kavanaugh's confirmation to "Republican operatives shutting down the voting in 2000," the "swift-boating of John Kerry," attacks on former Arizona Sen. John McCain in the 2000 Republican primary and "what they did to me for 25 years."

"When you're dealing with an ideological party that is driven by the lust for power, that is funded by corporate interests who want a government that does its bidding, you can be civil but you can't overcome what they intend to do unless you win elections," she told Amanpour.

Clinton compared Kavanaugh's swearing-in ceremony at the White House on Monday to a "political rally" that "further undermined the image and integrity of the court."

She told Amanpour the effect on the court "troubles" and "saddens" her "because our judicial system has been viewed as one of the main pillars of our constitutional government."

"But the President's been true to form," Clinton added. "He has insulted, attacked, demeaned women throughout the campaign – really for many years leading up to the campaign. And he's continued to do that inside the White House."

The OP stated "SHE 1000% RIGHT. This...Is....War until we gain the POWER BACK!"

I say the war against these Republican SOBs must continue AFTER we win back power also. We must stomp out all of their dishonesty and greedy accomplishments of the last 30 years. They declared war on the middle class, working class and the poor starting with Reagan. Up to this point they have succeeded. It's time to turn the tables and not take our foot off the gas until the right wing fraud is totally exposed and the power is returned to the people, not the corporations.

Hillary is only half right.
"if we are fortunate enough to win back the House and or the Senate, that's when civility can start again."

What?? Has she learned nothing? If she thinks Republicans are going to suddenly change their spots ESPECIALLY if they see their power slipping if they do lose the House, Ill have what she's having. Democrats should immediately re-start a more thorough investigation of Kavanaugh, as Jerrold Nadler is suggesting. Which may bring up enough to impeach or even cause him to be disbarred. And THAT kind of action will not be seen as "civil" to Republicans.

Trumpism is not going to go away. Trump himself will be perpetually tweeting and rallying his followers. His cult will continue. InfoWars will continue. Stormfront will continue. Lies and phony conspiracy theories will continue. Fox News will continue.

None of those things will stop and suddenly play by "civil" rules.

Not only is this a terrible message for Democratic politicians, but for the average rank and file. It is a part of the problem we have already. That one part victory, (Obama as President) means we can all relax and hope civility is enough to defeat a rising, huge monster who is only going to get bigger and more powerful with even more conservative media monopolies like Sinclair taking over our airwaves.

Maybe you should read this to know what this type of WAR is like....

Yes, Brett Kavanaugh is on the Supreme Court. Rue the day. Rend your garments.

Then, step back, view the entirety of the battle in which you are engaged, and understand that Kavanaugh is just one part of a much larger plan by conservatives to fundamentally change the American political structure so that it enshrines and protects white male power even after America’s changing demographics and mores move away from that power.

This, for them, is not simply a game about political passion and political principles. This is a game of power, pure and simple, and it’s about whether the people who have long held that power will be able to retain it.

For them, Trump is just a useful idiot, a temporary anomaly.

They are thinking generationally, not in terms of the next election cycle but in terms of the next epoch.

Liberals can get so high-minded that they lose sight of the ground war. Yes, next month it is important to prove to the rest of Americans, and indeed the world, that Trump and the Republicans who promote and protect him are at odds with American values and with the American majority.

On one level this would provide relief and release for a pent-up demand by most Americans to be heard and to calm some of the chaos. But, catharsis is an emotional response and an emotional remedy.

Liberals have to look beyond emotions, beyond reactionary electoral enthusiasm, beyond needing to fall in love with candidates in order to vote for them, beyond the coming election and toward the coming showdown.

Any Supreme Court confirmation is transformative. This is a court that is often equally divided. At the end of the day, I think what’s really important to remember is that there’s been a movement on the court toward being more originalist and textualist. In other words, the idea that law means something, it has determinate meaning. And that’s the trend that I think this president wants to continue.

But, when I think of originalism, I think this: Many of the founders owned slaves; in the Constitution they viewed black people as less than fully human; they didn’t want women or poor white men to vote. The founders, a bunch of rich, powerful white men, didn’t want true democracy in this country, and in fact were dreadfully afraid of it.

Now, a bunch of rich, powerful white men want to return us to this sensibility, wrapped in a populist “follow the Constitution” rallying cry and disguised as the ultimate form of patriotism.

We have to learn to see everything around us, all that is happening on the political front, through that lens. This is what the extreme measures on illegal immigration and even the efforts to dramatically slash legal immigration are all about.

I think it helps to act like a normal person. Enthusiastic, angry, but not yelling. If Repubs keep pushing their talking point "mob rule! Mob rule!," we should respond by saying Trump is the ultimate mob boss, requiring pledges of loyalty, authoritarianism, acting more like a dictator than a President, surrounded by his "family." But not yell like Lindsey Graham.

I'm thinking people are looking for normal people, tired of all the exhausting lies and drama. People who actually are interested in governing and not just looking to use the government to enrich themselves. Drain the swamp!

It would be painted as "sore losers" and might end up tossing the Congress right back to the right. Remember the majority of voters consider themselves independent. They may view an attempt to increase the number of judges as just a cheap way around.
Plus, has anyone actually polled the Democrats in Congress to see what they think of it?
It doesnt require a 2/3 vote, so its not out of the question.
Then again, the GOP could do the same thing and what would we say?

How the Republicans stole two seats. That they were only making up for, and balancing the court to closer to what it should have been. (Actually it would have been a majority of D appointed)

But you are right, no way because it means a 2/3 vote. Not to mention the lack of an appetite for fighting "dirty" by top Democrats.

We were in complete control with the Republicans on the down hill slope to irrelevance. But our Congressional leaders saw fit to let the Republicans slide out of the noose, and 'pubs lied, cheated, and stole their way back to power.

Never again! When we regain control of Government, (and we will) we have to put our boot heel on the throat of the opposition and choke them out.

For as much as I love Bam, one his biggest errors while President was his continual search for middle ground with the GOP. Basically we had the GOP with their mouths on the curb, and we (as represented by our chosen representatives) refused to stomp. Instead we helped them up, brushed them off, welcomed them to the table, and for our efforts we got a punch in the mouth. Now, there is no longer any room for compromise, as compromise means capitulation of morality.

The Republicans were aware of the SCOTUS issue, they held Scalia's seat open for over 400 days and the Democrats did nothing about it.

They didn't hammer that theft as a campaign issue, they didn't call out the GOP for its gross misconduct. I know they didn't have the votes in the Senate, but this wasn't a big issue in 2016. It was more like a smaller line item at a campaign stop.
