Migrant Caravan Masses Near Mexico's Southern Border
Source: WSJ
TECUN UMAN, GuatemalaA caravan of 3,000 Honduran migrants that has drawn the ire of U.S. President Trump began to mass near Guatemalas border with Mexico, setting up a showdown with Mexican authorities who have vowed to prevent the group from continuing their journey to the U.S.
Tension was palpable in Ciudad Hidalgo, a tiny tropical village in Mexico surrounded by rain forest and banana plantations that borders Tecun Uman in Guatemala, with the two towns separated by a muddy river. Late Thursday, some 300 Mexican federal police officers equipped with antiriot gear were deployed to the border crossing ahead of the caravans expected arrival.
On Thursday, the Mexican government asked the United Nations Refugee Agency for help in assisting migrants filing for refugee protection at the border, as Mr. Trump threatened to deploy the U.S. military and close the southern U.S. border with Mexico if it doesnt stop what he described as an onslaught of migrants.

(21,108 posts)The repukes are going to use this as an October surprise to turn out their voters in November. Undocumented Immigration has been a big voting incentive for the orange maggot.

(29,198 posts)Which means that if Mexico doesn't stop them... they will likely arrive at the US border in about a week or two ( just in time for a "border immigrant crises" to hit the news just days before the midterm election).
I would not be surprised to find that certain right wing groups here have paid for the passage and the creation of this caravan just to highlight the issue for Trump voters.
Not that the refugees aren't fleeing for their lives... they are... but the passage costs money...

(9,426 posts)travellers, but where do they expect to live if they get to the US? Where will they work? Do they speak English? Do they think the US can give them housing and jobs? Something must be done to help them I agree, but did they not pass through any towns on their journey, that they could have settled in? Why the US?

(12,047 posts)Thousands of migrants whove trekked from Honduras in hopes of making it to the United States broke down a metal gate at the Mexico-Guatemala border Friday afternoon, according to a report. The caravan of migrants rushed toward a border bridge in Mexico just after noon local time as hundreds of federal police and Guatemalan cops in riot gear stood guard.
The scores of men, women and children waved Honduran flags and chanted, One way or another, we will pass and We are not smugglers, we are immigrants as they gathered along the muddy Suchiate River.
The group then rushed a border bridge about 150 yards away, with about 50 people pushing their way through as police unleashed pepper spray. Some members of the caravan also threw rocks. We need you to stop the aggression, a federal police officer yelled at the crowd from a loudspeaker.
Luis Manuel Lopez Moreno, Mexicos ambassador to Guatemala, said his country would enforce a policy of metered entry and agreed to grant humanitarian and asylum visas to the migrants, the Wall Street Journal reported. Moreno said some 100 migrants a day would be allowed into the country to have their asylum requests reviewed.
The process will allow them to enter Mexico legally until their cases are resolved and let them travel freely about the country. If approved, theyll be permitted to stay in Mexico permanently.
