Conn. GOP Gubernatorial Candidate: We Shouldn't Vaccinate Kids 'for No Reason'
Source: The Daily Beast
Bob Stefanowski, the Republican gubernatorial candidate in Connecticut, expressed skepticism about vaccines during a summer campaign event, according to video cited in a Monday night report from NBC News. At a Quiet Corner Tea Party campaign event, an audience member asked Stefanowski about his position on mandatory vaccines for children attending public school. Do you think the state should dictate [immunizations] or should local [Boards of Education] handle that? the individual asked, according to video provided by a source working for a Connecticut democratic campaign. I think it depends on the vaccination, Stefanowski responded. We shouldnt be dumping a lot of drugs into kids for no reason.
Stefanowski did say, however, that all three of his daughters had been vaccinated. He also refused to commit to changing current state law, which mandates vaccinations for common ailments before children begin school. Id want to see it, Stefanowski said. Im really not dodging your question. A hypothetical bill that Ive never seen, its hard for me to say. A spokesman for Stefanowski told NBC that Bobs position here is in line with the law. While he believes that the best practice is to vaccinate your children, he does not believe that the government should be able to legally force you to do so.

(16,646 posts)It actually sounds like this was a big dodge on his part. He's not anti-vax, and potentially basically the opposite. But he doesn't wanna piss them off either. He knows he loses alot of votes if he takes a pro-position, but doesn't gain alot. So he says something meaningless to sooth the anti-vax folks.

(3,290 posts)How sad that public servants can utter such stupidity. Just this morning there was a report of a measles outbreak in Europe because so many are not getting vaccinated. This then leads to infecting those who cannot, for medical reasons, be vaccinated against some diseases.

(22,130 posts)allowed into public schools as a result in many jurisdictions? School systems (some) have been negatively impacted by too many kids not being vaccinated and thus coming to school and putting the other kids / teachers / other workers at risk.
This is totally irresponsible. Government does have a role here to play, to ensure that people don't get sick or spread diseases around which are very treatable. Idiot.

Six children in the Orthodox Jewish community of Williamsburg have been diagnosed with measles this month, the city health department says.
The New York City Health Department says the child had gone to Israel, where a large outbreak of the disease is occurring, and returned to the Orthodox Jewish community in Williamsburg, where five others have since been diagnosed with measles this month.
The six children range in age from 11 months to 4 years old. Five of the kids were unvaccinated before being exposed, including four because vaccination was delayed and one who was too young to have gotten the vaccine. The sixth child had gotten one dose of the vaccine before exposure, but wasn't yet immune.
Complications from the disease put one child in the hospital with pneumonia, and another with an ear infection, health officials say.

(19,246 posts)There are, however, laws saying your unvaccinated kids can't go to public schools with my kids.
IE, it's a paranoid delusion, just like the RW nutjob's fear the "gubmint" is gonna kick in their doors and take their guns, or force them to get gay-married.
