Trump: 'No Proof' of Middle Easterners in Migrant Caravan

Source: The Daily Beast

President Trump told reporters Tuesday that he has "no proof" people from the Middle East are traveling in the migrant caravan from Honduras, as he's previously claimed. "There's no proof of anything. But there could very well be," he told reporters in the Oval Office Tuesday. Trump also said he'd recently spoken to Border Patrol officials and claimed they have "intercepted ISIS" before. Earlier, Vice President Mike Pence had insisted that it "is inconceivable that there would not be individuals from the Middle East as a part of this growing caravan." Pence told reporters in the Oval Office that President of Honduras Juan Orlando Hernndez told him the migrant caravan "was organized by leftist organizations and financed by Venezuela."

Without proof, Mike Pence says it's 'inconceivable' that Trump is lying about Middle Easterners in caravan

DAVID EDWARDS
23 OCT 2018 AT 13:09 ET

Vice President Mike Pence on Tuesday defended President Donald Trump's assertion that people from the Middle East are secretly traveling in a caravan headed through Mexico to the United States.

While speaking with journalist Robert Costa at a Washington Post event, Pence was asked about Trump's claim, which reporters have been unable to verify.

"Where is the evidence?" Costa asked.

"Well, it's inconceivable that there are not people of Middle Eastern descent in a crowd of more than 7,000 people advancing toward our border," Pence argued with a shrug.

"Inconceivable?" Costa pressed.

"There are statistics on this," Pence insisted. "In the last fiscal year we apprehended 10 terrorists or suspected terrorists per day at our southern border -- from countries that are referred to as 'other than Mexico,'" the vice president said. "That means from the Middle East region."

I've noticed this kind of response is typical of malignant narcissists... They are afraid to be wrong and then be shamed, so they never commit to anything. Donald Trump tries to please everyone by taking all sides. To do so requires lying, of course, but it's in their nature... I, personally, don't believe Trump is planning anything... He's deeply terrified of being wrong... So, he says whatever he needs to say to escape a situation and save face.

With people like Trump, it's always "we'll see", or "we're looking into it/at it", or "maybe".
Most people commit to beliefs and opinions and action, and aren't afraid of failure. I've seen this my whole life.

So have I... I grew up with it, saw the patterns, but never knew it had a name... malignant narcissism. I wish I knew then what I know now... I've wrote on DU before, the only benefit of a Trump presidency is that many of us will understand narcissistic personality disorder, recognize it our own lives, and defend ourselves against it properly.

El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras are countries other than Mexico, and that's where most of the refugees are coming from. In fact, all countries other than Mexico are countries other than Mexico, right? So any Swedes, Canadians or Italians that enter the U.S. have got to be terrorists because they are from countries other than Mexico? And I guess that because everybody who comes to the U.S. from Mexico is a rapist, that means they can't be a terrorist because, being from Mexico, they are not from countries other than Mexico?

I'm so confused...

There has been an uptick in Bangladeshis being caught at the Mexican border -- apparently they pay drug cartels to get smuggled out of Bangladesh and into the US via the southern border. Of course, not that it matters to Pence or Trump, Bangladesh is in Asia, not the Middle East.

These people are over a thousand miles away! They are WALKING! Even if they could do 20 miles a day non-stop (which they can’t), how long will it take to get to U.S. border? Do the math! The American attention span will have covered a thousand new subjects. Not many people still talk about the separated children. Please. Mango Menace making noise to distract.

Is there any proof of this?

That would be around 3,650 terrorists or suspected terrorists in the last year. That sounds like more scare tactics and propaganda to me.

When did it become OK to make unsubstantiated accusations?
The media should do some stories about this and the basic reasons all these people are fleeing their home counties. A little information on what our country has created down south of Mexico way would be good also.

I think I saw drone footage of the caravan, maybe not, wait sure it was on tv. I saw many brightly colored unicorns marching inside the ranks of the terrorist crowd. You know it’s a fact that liberals are always hiding behind unicorns, that’s why they have stars in their eyes. I heard that at my dentist’s officer was it in line at the grocery store? You know wherever there’s liberals there’s those middle eastern people.

https://www.politifact.com/texas/statements/2018/feb/21/mike-pence/pants-fire-mike-pences-claim-about-nabbing-7-terro/

Basically, the likely statistic (not that he tried to explain this) was that 7 people a day on the 'terrorist' watch list were refused entry to the USA. The vast majority by air, not the Mexico border:

In Dallas, Pence said the seven daily apprehensions were taking place along the southern border. But in 2017, according to the report, most of the deterred individuals were stopped from entering by airplane--not necessarily at the border. According to the report, of the 2,554 individuals, 335 were attempting to enter by land, 2,170 were attempting to enter by air and 49 were attempting to enter by sea.

Also by email, Sterman cautioned that being on a watch list "is not the same as being a terrorism suspect. It’s a vast architecture that includes many names for varying levels of concern. Denying entry is a low bar to clear. Which is part of the reason citing this number to defend the immigration-centric counterterrorism strategy is misleading. It’s more of a sign that a lot is already done."
