Plane crashes onto 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills

Source: Los Angeles Times

A vintage small plane crashed onto the 101 in Agoura Hills on Tuesday afternoon, shutting down the freeway in both directions, authorities said.

Los Angeles County firefighters arrived at the crash site near Liberty Canyon Road about 1:50 p.m. According to spokeswoman Vanessa Lozano, the plane crashed “in the middle of the freeway.”

No injuries were reported. Los Angeles County Fire spokesman Marvin Lim said he did not know whether the pilot was able to safely exit the plane himself or had been removed by rescuers.

Images tweeted by drivers on the freeway showed the vintage airplane in flames, emitting a black cloud of smoke. Firefighters put out the flames about 2:15 p.m., officials said. Fire officials were waiting for National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration investigators to arrive, Lozano said.

WW2 German markings, maybe not the best thing to do...

Didn't work out so well the first time around.

Just saying.

Old, but not necessarily rare.

Hopefully the pilot got out okay.

There was a fundraising event being held in the local RSA by the local Women's Auxiliary, and the organisers had arranged for Ireland's most decorated WWII pilot to speak to the assembled ladies.

He started telling the story of a mission over France and how they were being strafed by German fire.

" I looked out in front of me" he said " and there was three fokkers in front, and then I looked behind me, and there was three fokkers behind me, and then I looked above me, and there was two fokkers above, and then I looked below me, and there was four fokkers below"

Just then the organiser, thinking that the ladies might misunderstand, and assume the ex-pilot was swearing jumped up and said "For all those who don't know, the Fokker was a plane used by the Germans during the war"

and the Irish pilot said "Yeah, but these Fokkers were Messerschmidts"

the dad's kind of a jerk for one thing he said. His kid says "Look out for the airplane", and then the dad says, "Look Bubba, there's a plane on the freeway!" I feel bad for the kid. He just said "Look out for the airplane", so he obviously knows the plane is there. A grownup can say "yeah I know, I just said that, asshole!" But the kid can't say that.

That is all.
