Iowa library considers options after burning of LGBTQ books

Source: Associated Press

Updated 1:45 pm CDT, Monday, October 29, 2018

ORANGE CITY, Iowa (AP) — Library officials in northwest Iowa are deciding how to respond after a religious activist burned four LGBTQ children's books.

Orange City library director Amanda Vazquez told The Sioux City Journal that officials aren't sure if they'll replace the destroyed books.

"We're exploring our options at this point," she said.

Paul Dorr, the director of religious group Rescue the Perishing, released a nearly 30-minute video on Facebook Live in which he denounced the library for having the LGBTQ books and threw them in a burning barrel. The video was made on Oct. 19, the first day of the city's gay pride festival.

Therefore, the property of the city or county the Library is located in. The Library should bring charges against him. That is censorship and should not be tolerated. I would not let him by with this. At the very least, a civil suit.

These people think that their opinion is the only one that matters. Make an example out of him.

He shouldn't be able to check out books anymore. If they just charge him for the books, he'll just keep paying for them over and over. Deliberately destroying books is not the same as losing books. It's all about the borrower's intentions.

Facing a chilly reception from Capitol Hill, Sam Clovis is the most controversial selection for a senior USDA post since Iowa agribusinessman Tom Dorr in the opening days of the George W. Bush administration

“Mr. Clovis is a former Trump campaign adviser and conservative radio talk show host with no background in the hard sciences, nor expertise in agriculture policy,” said Coons. In a statement, Coons cited the statutory requirement for the undersecretary for research to be a scientist with specialized or significant experience in agricultural research, education, and economics. Glassner quickly connected Papadopoulos with campaign co-chairman Sam Clovis.

Clovis and Papadopoulos spoke by phone four days later, a conversation in which Clovis said improving relations with Russia was a top foreign policy goal of the campaign, according to what Papadopoulos later told prosecutors.

Man Burns LGBT Kids' Books to Spite Pride Event
There may be legal action against Paul Dorr by the library where he says he got the books from

By Jenn Gidman, Newser Staff

(NEWSER) – What was supposed to be a positive celebration of an LGBT community in Iowa was somewhat marred after a man recorded himself on Facebook burning LGBT-themed books (some of them children's volumes) he said he'd checked out of the Orange City Public Library. The Des Moines Register IDs the man as Paul Dorr, who runs a religious group called Rescue the Perishing, and he started his book-burning Friday right before an OC Pride event. "I cannot stand by and let the shameful adults at the Orange City library board bring the next group of little children into their foul sexual reality without a firm resistance," Dorr said in the video, per Iowa Public Radio. He hurled insults like "filthy" and "shameful" at what appeared to be four books he proceeded to burn, along with a tangerine-colored dress.

"I found it disgusting," Mark Stringer, executive director of the ACLU of Iowa, tells the Des Moines Register of Dorr's actions. Stringer adds that someone burning books from a public library is akin to "deciding that they're the gatekeeper of ideas for the rest of the public." The Register notes that three of the books Dorr set on fire were on a petition that circulated earlier this year asking the library to either ban or separate LGBT books from all the others. The library did eventually reorganize its books by category instead of alphabetically by author name. The library says there may be legal action against Dorr. (A Florida book burning ended up destroying 10 homes.)

In 1823, Heinrich Heine wrote the words, "Dort wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man auch am Ende Menschen," or "Where books are burned, in the end, people will also be burned." More than a century later in 1933, young Nazi students in Germany organized a nationwide book burning to eliminate foreign influence. As this quote eerily predicted, the mass murder of Jews in the Holocaust soon followed.

If you don't like a book, don't read it or don't let your kids read it. If someone else wants to, that's none of your business. I just don't understand why people can't just mind their own affairs.

Bill the dumbass for the books he destroyed. If he doesn't pay (and of course he won't) then go from there with whatever remedies they normally use for people who don't pay for books they lose/wreck.
