MATTHEWS, N.C. -- A North Carolina high school student shot and killed a fellow student during a fight in a crowded school hallway Monday morning, officials said, prompting a lockdown and generating an atmosphere of chaos and fear as dozens of parents rushed to the school to make sure their children were safe.

The police department in Matthews, about 12 miles southeast of Charlotte, said 16-year-old freshman Jatwan Cuffie was taken into custody by a school resource officer about 10 minutes after the shooting at Butler High School. Police Capt. Stason Tyrrell said Cuffie admitted the shooting to a teacher and the teacher helped arrange his surrender to police.
Tyrrell said a school resource officer who was in the building heard a commotion in a hallway adjacent to the cafeteria at 7:14 a.m. and saw students running away. He arrived at the scene seconds later and started rendering aid to the wounded student. Three other officers were on scene within minutes, he said.

"The conflict began with bullying and escalated out of control," Wilcox said. "As fear took over, the young person brought a gun to solve the problems."

Somehow a gun will be found if the person wants one bad enough.

(13,828 posts)The NRA has done such a bang up job of making sure gun makers can sell their wares that it's damned easy to obtain one. Just speculation, but I'd guess that the kid found one at home.

(5,240 posts)We have taught our children that guns are the way to solve problems. No need to learn self control or how to deal with issues thoughtfully, just kill the person who upsets you.

(17,802 posts)You could easily buy one using the internet, classified ads, gun forums, or in person with a fake id at a gun show.
Or grab your gun humping parents gun, or one of your friends parents.
Or you could print one.
Legal? No, but the other kid is still dead, and shooting them wasn't exactly legal either.

(1,249 posts)Is this a case of 'stand your ground' from the 'victim of the bullying' standpoint?
ManiacJoe
(10,138 posts)Before one can claim "stand your ground", he first has to be able to claim a legal lethal self-defense, which is difficult to do for common high school situations.
Even if the lethal self defense is legal, there is the illegal gun possession by a minor and illegal gun possession in a school, assuming NC laws mimic those elsewhere.
