I am a volunteer with the Florida Democratic Party and was on a call this afternoon strategizing about Nelson's recount. There are an abnormally high amount of provisional ballots cast yesterday and the mailed in ballots are being rejected at a worrisome rate. We are fighting back, calling everyone who filled out a provisional ballot and voted Democratic and offering them rides to the Supervisor of Elections office if needed. If we don't get them after 2 attempts, we will be knocking on their doors.
I just wanted you to know that the party leaders think we have a fighting chance!

(27,639 posts)Maybe this has something to do with how two major Democratic candidates wound up losing after leading every poll ? Sounds like Florida gonna Florida.

(8,742 posts)They tried in 2016 to do that to me. With a mail-in. Specifically a Republican tried that. That Republican was even at one point on Fox News.

(4,370 posts)As a fellow Floridian, I'm bothered by the fact that the county Supervisors of Elections -- not to mention the Florida Secretary of State, who certifies statewide election results -- are partisan, elected officials themselves. And in many of the 67 counties, these are RepubliCONs.
What safeguards are in place to ensure that vote counts are accurately and objectively measured? OK, they may have sworn an oath, but what else is in place to protect us?
And, if the situation was reversed, where Democrats controlled vote-counting and validation, do you think the Reich-wing partisans would tolerate such a system? Not bloody likely!
If we, as a state, can overwhelmingly approve a constitutional amendment protecting greyhound dogs, why can we not submit and pass a similar referendum to protect our right to a secure and non-partisan oversight of voting results?

(33,643 posts)Contain some kind of marking that delineates a registered D/R voter's ballot.
That'd be a pretty simple way to cheat ... though it'd require telling a lot of people what to 'look for' when deciding to reject mailed-in ballots. Unless that process is automated ... in which case, program the machines to look for the marking.
Of course someone could theoretically look inside and see who the voter voted for I suppose and 'reject it' but I'd imagine that'd look a lot more suspicious, I'd think .

Off-shore ballots have until Nov. 16th to be returned. Many mail-in are still coming in.
Many votes in Broward County are being sent in via thumb drive and needs to be counted.
This shit's getting real!

(8,007 posts)Should there be an issue they can be ruled to be provisional with notification to the owner specifying the shortcoming, giving the voter a chance to correct - the same process as with in person voting. Outright rejection should be prohibited and challenged in court. There is also the issue of uniform standards that comes into play where all Counties apply the same rules.
