A Wisconsin school district is considering what consequences students should face after an alarming photograph surfaced, supposedly of the male students of the class of 2019. The image, tweeted from an account that has since been made private, allegedly shows dozens of Baraboo High School students at their junior prom giving the Nazi salute.
A screenshot was shared by Twitter user @CarlySidey, with details later posted by VICE contributor Jules Suzdaltsev. The account that originally posted the image, @GoBaraboo, is now listed as "protected," meaning only permitted users are allowed to see its posts.
The Barbaroo School District has yet to issue a response, but their official Twitter account retweeted a message from School District Administrator Lori Mueller that addressed the issue, and it appears that they are taking the matter very seriously, even considering legal action, should it be deemed appropriate.
Law&Crime reached out to Mueller for additional comment. A phone call to Barbaroo High School was directed to the voicemail of Principal Glenn Bildsten, but so far there has been no response to a message left by Law&Crime.

(56,848 posts)it wasn't the nazi salute, but a student was angry at her school administrators over something being cancelled at the school, and called them "douchebags" and other similar words on social media.
she was suspended from the school and then barred from running for Senior Class Secretary - when she won as a write in candidate, she was barred from holding the position.
She sued - and lost.
Case summary here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doninger_v._Niehoff
But, I think calling school admins "douchebags" on social media is a few steps below having a mass Nazi Salute on school grounds.

ALL of them, except for that one kid who didn't go along with it.
Let them explain that in their college applications.

(58,785 posts)I remember back in California 2 bright lively new high school grads from a good school district who couldn't answer when a reporter asked them how many senators each state had. My kids were taught that repeatedly, beginning in elementary school. I'd guess at home from their parents is precisely where the 2 girls learned that knowing this stuff didn't matter, reinforced by their friends.
I also remember going with a friend and his boys to a matinee for the movie Independence Day and being shocked and horrified when the theater full of kids cheered the destruction of the White House. Those kids got that from their parents, within the context of the growing dysfunction caused by the giant right wing anti-government conspiracy, which continues, and are now themselves parents.

This was deliberate and planned. They feel emboldened - and hell, why wouldn't they.

I hope every college in the country sees this picture and doesn't admit them. (I have worked at two different colleges... they check FB pages and probably more.)

I would guess that most of these kids are followers and that even the leaders may think this is just a fun and cool way to rebel.
They need to learn about the pain and suffering this represents.

(12,618 posts)Legally you can't do anything to them because they didn't do anything illegal. Morally reprehensible? Yes. But not illegal. But the school could take disciplinary action, and it sounds like they don't want to do that. It sounds like this type of crap has been going on at this school for awhile and the school administrators have turned a blind eye to it. Saying they are considering "legal action" that will never come sounds like an attempt to make it seem like they are doing something about it when they are not.

(1,402 posts)This is disgraceful............just like our disgraceful DJT, I'm sure if the kids think our president can act this way so can they. He needs to be gone so values and what we stand for can return to our nation. If DJT and other like him stay in power, these young people may be able to see first hand what horrors of Nazism they will have to live through. Where are the parents of these kids?

(322 posts)How many think the original meaning should be taken back?
School children who know the proper way to salute the american flag using the Bellamy salute:

The origin is from you know who:

This is but one of other ancient symbols ruined by the douchebag, the others being the Swastika and the Fasces. Again, I may be getting off the subject a bit but I'm a believer in original context. By acknowledge the origin you strip power away from those that wish to appropriate said symbolism, by acknowledging the modern day interpretation...well you acknowledge them in the way they wanted you to.

(94,129 posts)A week before the Nov. 6 midterm election, a flyer with the header WHITE LIVES MATTER, was illegally distributed in mailboxes in Baraboo, Reedsburg and Spring Green. Fliers also were placed on vehicles in Wisconsin Dells.
The single-page flyer listed links to several websites promoting nationalist and anti-Semitic views. The Baraboo postmaster said at the time the office was aware of the flyers and carriers were removing them.

(53,994 posts)of the "salute." Given the general lack of knowledge young people seem to have (take your noses out of your phones), this group of young men might well be totally clueless about the implications of the photo. Rather than take "legal action" (what the heck would that be??), educate them.

(37,748 posts)My initial reaction is to cut them a break... they're only juniors in high school.
My second reaction is that as a junior in high school, I was old enough to realize that raising my arm a nazi salute would be among the worst and most stupid decisions I could make.
So yeah, these aren't idiot kids so much as they're just idiots.
Let the consequences of their actions be a reminder to them to stop making idiot choices.
