AUGUSTA - State election officials declared Democrat Jared Golden the winner of Maine's 2nd Congressional District race against incumbent Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin.

Ranked-choice race for Congress:
Maine's 2nd District
STATUS: 100%
Jared Golden (D) 51% 139,231
Bruce Poliquin (R) 49% 136,326
A candidate must exceed 50 percent of the vote to be declared the winner. Because no one received a majority vote in the first round, last-place finishers are eliminated and their votes get redistributed based on their voters' second or third choices. Learn more here.

Congrats to the winner. You can bet that the republican is going to go to court to overturn, but voters in Maine twice approved ballot proposals to adopt rank choice voting.

(58,618 posts)net gain, that is.
We actually flipped 40 seats from red-to-blue, but lost 2 or 3 seats that went the other way.
Still, pretty good stuff.

(58,618 posts)Not a big fan of the 'instant run-off' system, but it seems to have worked well there, and not just because the 'right' candidate won. Looks like it ran pretty smoothly.
Congrats to Golden and to the great state of Maine!

(6,496 posts)Maine needs it because of all the independents that run. We need this implemented in our state office elections too. Hopefully, the dems can get that done.

(6,496 posts)which means more legal bullshit. Good god! He wants to sue his way into that seat. He wants to get a federal judge to say our instant run off system is unconstitutional. Wondering if that happens, do we get redo election? People voted for independents as their first choice knowing it would not impact Golden winning. People's voting strategy is impacted by the type of race. If it was plurality vote, then they'd weigh in the fact that the Republican might win if they vote independent. Anyhow, it's pretty obvious the majority wanted Golden, so Poliquin is just being a dick. Mainers aren't going to appreciate him being a sore loser.

(1,499 posts)Maine approved RCV twice
State govt. has ironed out all the details of how it works
ME constitution bars the Governor from being elected this way, but not federal electees.
US constitution leaves it up to the states to iron out how they place Congresspeople.
Also the RCV process has been challenged in the courts several times and always survives the challenge. Last Fed judge yesterday was Republican appointed and he threw out the challenge as well. The Repub party filed a lawsuit against RCV BEFORE this election and got their whiny asses handed to them.
Next will Poliquin get on the phony voter fraud bandwagon?

(6,496 posts)I'm hopeful that any further court cases will uphold RCV and this election, just don't know for sure until it happens.

(6,496 posts)"Golden, 36, defeated two-term incumbent Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin in a race that has been closely watched ahead of and now well past Election Day, when neither candidate received more than 50 percent of the votes, forcing a runoff.
As ballots were being tallied for a runoff, Poliquin and three others filed a lawsuit in federal court challenging the legality of ranked-choice voting. That lawsuit is likely to be decided in December, meaning that, at least for now, Golden is a congressman-elect."

I would hope that the judge would consider that Poliquin never brought up any concerns prior or during the election. He only complained when it became apparent that he was going to lose. The rules shouldn't be adjusted in the race after the fact.

(6,496 posts)Congressman-elect Jared Golden says the ranked-choice voting system worked as voters intended.
"I feel good about the process that just took place here in Maine," Golden said.
Congressman Bruce Poliquin maintains he won the election, and ranked-choice votes shouldn't count.
"I won the election against tremendous odds," Poliquin said. "I won the election fair and square. So the election should be over."

What an asshole! He says he won, which he didn't, "against tremendous odds". LOL! Being a two term incumbent this should have been and easy win for him if he was actually doing his job and representing the people of his district. Also notice he's using the Trump word "tremendous". Poor loser... he is making Mainers dislike him even more than they did before because he is disrespecting our decision to use RCV and the outcome of this race.
