Democrat Stacey Abrams Ends Bid For Georgia Governor, Decrying 'Suppression'

Source: NPR

Republican Brian Kemp will be the next governor of Georgia, with Democrat Stacey Abrams conceding Friday afternoon following a bitter 10-day battle since election day last week.

The contest between the two had been one of the most closely-watched and bitter of the cycle. Abrams, who was vying to become the first black woman ever elected governor in U.S. history, had alleged throughout the campaign that Kemp, who stepped down as secretary of state after the election, had been working to disenfranchise minority voters and suppress new registrations.

Those charges spilled out well beyond Nov. 6, with the race too close to call. Abrams had been fighting to include additional provisional and absentee ballots into the count, hoping that could help her close the roughly 18,000 vote deficit she needed to force a runoff next month.

But with a 5 p.m. Friday deadline for all of Georgia's counties to certify their election results, a path for Abrams was looking slim. It's now up to interim secretary of state Robyn Crittenden to certify the state's results.

1. "The state failed its voters", she said.

Ain't that the truth! The GOP led state is more like it. The whole GA election should have a do-over.

3. 2020. Florida, Georgia, everywhere else

We won't soon forget or overlook the abject corruption and assaults on democracy that generated these illegitimate election results.

6. I read it was a longshot, sortof unprecedented.

IMHO, there needs to be more structural changes within the state - AT the state level and in the state government - in order to really get over the hump.

10. To me, her statement sounded more like an opening announcement for 2022 . . .

and a call to her party to engineer fundamental changes to the structure of voting in Georgia, so that the next election will be conducted on a level playing field.

I'm going to send a donation to her today because though I may not be alive the next time she runs, I'll feel better knowing the future of the country is in the hands of people like her.

11. Brian Kemp stole the election and is not our legitimate governor.

Stacey and all of us who voted for her have made history also, but good, revolutionary history. I'm disappointed, HATE having that criminal in office, but proud of what we've accomplished.

17. I am so sad. She can truly say the election was stolen from her with voter suppression and

the other hi-jinks out of Kemp's office.

Stacey, you were uber qualified to be the governor of Georgia.

Bad karma will get Kemp.

21. A person shouldn't be allowed to be Secretary of State

...and be a candidate at the same time.

Even a Secretary of State who wants to run for re-election should have to resign.
