Climate change will shrink US economy and kill thousands, government report warns

(CNN)A new US government report delivers a dire warning about climate change and its devastating impacts, saying the economy could lose hundreds of billions of dollars -- or, in the worst-case scenario, more than 10% of its GDP -- by the end of the century.

The federally mandated study was supposed to come out in December but was released by the Trump administration on Friday, at a time when many Americans are on a long holiday weekend, distracted by family and shopping.

David Easterling, director of the Technical Support Unit at the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, emphasized that there was "no external interference in the report's development." He added that the climate change the Earth is experiencing is unlike any other.

"The global average temperature is much higher and is rising more rapidly than anything modern civilization has experienced, and this warming trend can only be explained by human activities," Easterling said.

that would be a big help. This country is in dire need of proper education on this issue. Instead, we have a government full of fossil fuel company shills who perpetuate lies and misinformation. Trump and Senator SnowBall Imhoff spring immediately to mind.

3. By the end of this century, only thousands? No way. Fresh water worldwide runs out in 20 years, tops

This, of course, assumes there won't be resource wars over the next 81 years. I don't buy it.

Billions dead worldwide, guaranteed.

Thing I have noticed. Reports are issued. Reality, virtually invariably, turns out to be worse.

6. Personal note

I already have to be careful about going outside-it can't be too hot, or I get overheated. Can't go out if it's too cold, or I get sinus infections or pneumonia. I'm using protective lothing in the winter, but I was never affected less than 5 years ago.

Another personal note: I am not seeing insects. It used to be if I left a porch light on, my screen would be covered with moths, gnats, beetles. Now, if I see 2 or 3 small bugs, it is a busy night. If I did leave the light on, sometimes I'd see a toad catching bugs. I haven't seen a toad in my yard for about 2 years. I feed birds, squirrels, rabbits and maybe some shy nocturnal critters. I'm in the Ohio River Valley. My daughter lives in the hills above the river and she still has a good mix of bugs and toads. And animals such as squirrels, possums, foxes, deer, and coyotes.

I have been worried for years about the health of the planet. I think things are grim and it isn't going to get better.

Ohio valley here also. Stink bugs have taken over. I remember coming up here 20 years ago to visit my grandmother, and there could be piles of dead ladybugs in the windows that we would sweep up.

The rich bastards want to make money right up until they destroy the surface of the planet. A new definition of "insane". What good are trillions of dollars if we're all fucking dead. Can somebody please take out that crazy mother fucker and the party behind him? I don't care how.

11. That's the forecast? Well, duh. Al Gore has been on this for, what, 20 years? And in 1971 ...
Sat Nov 24, 2018, 02:51 AM
Nov 2018

...I took a university class called Technology, Ecology, and Man that about knocked my socks off at the time and certainly prepared me for Al Gore. And before that? A 9th-grade Science class that explained that the source of water on our island was an underground lens of fresh water floating on brackish water, and that the fresh water was only replenished by rain trickling down through layers of porous lava and was pretty much limited by the amount of rain and how fast it could drip through rock... which prepared me to understand the concept of finite resources.

This information has been out there and available to the average Joe for a really long time. My response to this report that Trump et al. intend to suppress is is wrong with people?

I am really pissed that it's my grandkids whose lives are going to be short, nasty, and brutish unless there is a fckng miracle. On the one hand, we live in California, which is pretty woke. On the other hand, we live on the coast, so maybe we shoukd invest in motorboats. On yet another hand -- fires. And then there is the fckng GOP in DC.
