Major League Baseball Asks Cindy Hyde-Smith to Return $5,000 Donation

Source: The Daily Beast

Major League Baseball is asking Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) to return its $5,000 donation to her campaign, amid a public outcry over her racially insensitive remarks that were caught on camera earlier this month.

“The contribution was made in connection with an event that MLB lobbyists were asked to attend,” the league said in a statement issued Sunday. “MLB has requested that the contribution be returned.”

The donation, the legal maximum, was made just two days ago, a few weeks after Hyde-Smith was forced to apologize for comments about “public hangings” and voter suppression, which she later said were simply jokes. Other companies, including Walmart, have similarly asked that the Hyde-Smith return their donations in light of her comments, which were criticized as racist.

The controversy has sprung Tuesday’s upcoming U.S. Senate election runoff into the national spotlight. Hyde-Smith, who was appointed to the Senate earlier this year when Thad Cochran retired, is defending her seat in a runoff against Mike Espy, who served in Congress for three terms and as Bill Clinton’s agriculture secretary. Espy is African-American.

It really would be a smart move for them to not donate politically, to any party or candidate.

They have sung "God Bless America" for 17 complete seasons because they didn't want to miss out on 9/11.
The special uniforms looks like a drunk Eagle vomited Red White and Blue paint on them.
The Padres have (or at least had) a camo uniform.

They have been riding the nationalism train for some time.

The alternate uniforms that are made to look like military camo make me want to puke.

World class athletes, in phenomenal condition, that could be military if they wanted to, but choose not to, wearing uniforms "honoring" the military? Jinogistic and militaristic nonsense.

Especially in Mississippi where n teams exist. Where's the payoff these lobbyists hope to cash in on?

I can see why MLB would lobby local politicians to build new taxpayer subsidized venues, but I don't know how the US Senate lines their pockets. Sure there're tax cuts, but I think they better look at the 500+ members of the House.

That is what the MLB lobbyists do. This is about minor leaguers' wages and benefits.

I have a feeling an organization just might have ignored it altogether, in the past.

Why any citizens of Mississippi would want to send this rabid clown to Washington at ALL makes the entire state looks horrible.

Have enjoyed the posts to your thread enormously.

Thanks for your post, and welcome to D.U..
