Russia accuses Trump of cancelling Putin meeting over 'domestic political situation'

Russian officials on Friday cast doubt on President Trump's official reason for canceling a planned bilateral summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin saying that the "US domestic political situation was the reason for Trump's decision to not meet with Putin.
Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for Russia's foreign ministry, said there was reason to doubt the Trump administration's given explanation of rising tensions between Russia and Ukrainian forces along the border of Crimea for the cancellation, according to CNN.
Was the provocation organized by Kiev in this region the real reason for cancellation? Zakharova said in a press conference first reported by Russian news agency RIA Novosti. Publicly, we heard just such an explanation, we took note of it. Is this a reality?"
"I think that you still need to look for answers in the US domestic political situation," she added.

Repeal of sanctions for drilling in the arctic aren't going to be lifted.
Will be interesting to see what happens with this renewed Russian aggression in Ukraine.
Wonder if the NRA will have to pay back all of that Russian money it funneled to Republicans? I mean Putin's guy Rohrabacher got beat. Nunes did squeak by.

This very notion should be appalling to ANY american, let alone the GOP. For russia t just say "we are going to meet" and have trump do it, should be enough to hot rail conviction in the senate.
Should be, but putin has spent millions on buying the gop, and senators especially. They will dismiss it as theatrics.
Disgusting.

(14,838 posts)RawStory seemingly plagiarize's (imho and many other people) stories from other sources and put their own by-line on it. Usually they will have some teenie-tiny tag saying it originally appeared on "x" or "y", but rarely do they provide a link to the story itself unless it's a site like salon.
They are an aggregator, which is very useful, but they take credit for stories they really didn't write - just edited.
A very dubious practice to say the least.

In this case, the Russians never used the word for summoned. It is true that they did not accept the cancellation, which is weird.

(3,131 posts)The optics would be particularly bad right now. Trump gets to say he did something on Ukraine. Putin gets to act like Trump isn't a puppet.
I've read some think that Putin might be regretting cultivating Trump. I think reducing American influence in the world, hurting our economy, causing domestic instability are more important to him long term than getting sanctions lifted, etc.
It's cheaper to compete by taking us down some notches.
Who knows how it will play out. Maybe there will be blow back that makes him regret. I think American's have short term memories. The Russians can play nice for a few years and get sanctions removed in less time than it will take to undo the damage caused.

Which is what he wanted all along.
