Chief Justice of California Supreme Court leaves GOP over Kavanaugh confirmation

Source: The Hill

The Chief Justice of California’s Supreme Court announced on Thursday that she had left the Republican Party following the confirmation of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

California Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye told CALmatters that she had been deliberating her decision for a while but made up her mind after watching the backlash following multiple sexual assault allegations leveled against Kavanaugh.

Cantil-Sakauye said she decided to re-register with no-party affiliation, saying she didn’t look at it as leaving the Republican Party.

“I’ve been thinking about it for some time,” Cantil-Sakauye said, noting that she had discussed her decision with her husband and friends. They told her, Cantil-Sakauye said, “you didn’t leave the party. The party left you.”

To hear the planned parenthood case. I hold no illusions that Kavanaugh is another Suter. The timing is likely coincidental and her plans were set immediately after confirmation.

10. Kavanaugh will attach himself to Roberts

I expect he will vote the same way as Roberts because Roberts is the chief justice and Kavanaugh is nothing if not a guy who cozies up to the most powerful person he's around. I do think that Roberts will move a few steps to the left because he is an institutionalist and will vote in ways to protect national and gov't institutions.

Conservative republican appointees tend to move left as they get older. To what degree depends on the justice but historically this is true and remains so. Check out Martin Quinn scores

2. I find it odd to need to discuss leaving a political party with friends and relatives.

I can see discussing something like leaving a spouse, leaving college, leaving a country, leaving one's religious organization, leaving a job,.....but a political party?
That seems to me like discussing whether one should change one's grocery.

Now that just tells me that I have failed to realize how attached one can become to a political party.
I am a registered Democrat, and could never imagine switching to being a republican.

But also, politics is not my life. Maybe if it were, I would feel differently.

Interesting food for thought...

is a big part of my life. I'm an elected Democratic precinct delegate for where I vote in Michigan with all that goes with it. The woman is an elected repub CA Supreme Court Judge. If you are an active member of a political party and an elected official, of course you would discuss leaving that party. I'm sure you would announce it too.

Being a simple voter only and occasional contributor of time and money, I just never think that way.

today switched from Republican to Democrat, in her case she says it's because of the GOP's stand on LGBTQ issues.

11. Sorry, but I don't think the party needs her.

So she shifted on one issue, but do we need someone claiming to be a Democrat that still denies climate change (not saying she does, but as an example).
If she hates them that much, she should just go get a real job or a clue.

13. "One issue"? Really? And do you think trying to regain majorities in elected offices is beneath you?

It's a rather baffling attitude.

think it should swing? As it is if you go back and watch the '92 debates, Ross Perot seems like the raving liberal in the room.
It appears you think winning is more important than the issues. Sorry, but I'm not so insecure in my views that I'm going to feel validated and jump for joy every time someone jumps to be on what they see as the winning side. If she carried an R behind her name this long, I'd say her motivations and views are suspect.
