The Latest: Walker signs lame duck bills weakening successor

Source: AP News

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has signed a sweeping package of Republican-authored lame-duck legislation that restricts early voting and weakens the incoming Democratic governor and attorney general.

The measures restrict early in-person voting to two weeks before an election. The legislation gives Republicans control of the state jobs creation agency, blocks Democratic Gov.-elect Tony Evers from withdrawing Wisconsin from a multistate lawsuit challenging the Affordable Care Act.

The bills also eliminate the state Justice Department’s solicitor general’s office and allow legislators to intervene in state lawsuits, ensuring they can defend Republican policies if Democratic Attorney General-elect Josh Kaul won’t.

Walker ignored pleas from Democrats and some Republicans to veto the measures, saying enacting them tarnishes his legacy.

Moments after Scott Walker signed a series of bills that weakened the power of the incoming Democratic Wisconsin governor and attorney general he was sued for a potentially illegal act.

Daniel Strauss of Politico reported:

And less than five minutes after Democratic Gov.-elect Tony Evers released his official statement, his political operation released a fundraising pitch. They knew this was coming.

One Wisconsin Now, with the backing of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, is suing Walker over the new laws.

Eric Holder: "This is a shameful attack on our democracy by politicians who will do anything to hold onto power."

Let's hope so. Yeah, you can't tarnish his legacy. That's an empty threat. Worst governor Wisconsin has ever had.

by a federal court ruling.

This person was Charlie Sykes, a well known conservative Trump hater speaking on public radio yesterday.

His opinion is that this does very little for the Republican cause, at the expense of Walker's legacy. Stupid, stupid move!

Courts likely to strike down Republican lame-duck power grabs, experts say

Republicans in Wisconsin, Michigan and North Carolina suffered stinging losses in November, but the parties aren’t transferring power quietly, or at all in some cases. On the way out the door, “lame-duck” state legislatures are bringing in last-minute laws that will strip power from incoming Democrats, gut voter-approved ballot initiatives, or otherwise undermine the election results.

But some legal experts say the most alarming legislation the Republicans have passed is unconstitutional and unlikely to survive outraged Democrats’ legal challenges.

Among other issues, they contend many of the Republican laws blur the constitutionally mandated separation of powers among the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government.

of the voters. By going after their pocketbooks, both party wise and personal too. Hit them where it hurts.

This was malicious and was designed to be so. Clear intent of (1) denying the voters what they wanted (2) changing the rules of the game while it was still being played. I can't believe that they have the power to change the governorship and what the legislators can address, issue wise, so it reeks illegally to me.

Not saying it would work, but every time the Republicans void them, bring them to court. This would at least show the voters how they are getting screwed.
