Nancy Pelosi Now Third In Line To Presidency

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

After being elected speaker of the House on Thursday afternoon, top Democrat Nancy Pelosi is one step closer to the Oval Office in the presidential line of succession.

Pelosi is now second in line to the presidency behind Vice President Mike Pence, according to Article 2, Section 1, Clause 6 of the U.S. Constitution. If something were to befall Trump, or if he were to resign, be removed or rendered incapable of holding office, Pence would step in to serve as the president. But in the case that the vice president cannot assume the position, the line of succession then falls to the House speaker.

Pelosi was elected to serve as speaker of the House during the swearing-in ceremony for the 116th Congress. The California Democrat garnered 220 votes of the 430 total ballots cast. In her victory speech, Pelosi praised the “transformative freshman class” of lawmakers and encouraged Democrats to be “pioneers of the future.”

After Pelosi, Republican Senator Chuck Grassley is third in line to the presidency after he was sworn in on Thursday as President Pro Tempore of the Senate. If Grassley cannot serve, then the responsibility falls to Trump’s cabinet members. The cabinet line of succession begins with the secretary of state, a position currently held by Mike Pompeo.

In US history only 8 vice presidents have assumed the presidency after the death of a president, one took office after a president resigned. Speculation that Trump will be impeached or resign has increased with his legal troubles and investigations in Washington D.C. and New York. Robert Mueller's probe focuses on whether the 2016 Trump campaign colluded with Russia and the president obstructed justice in the investigation.

5. As the story, not the headline, correctly notes, she's second in line.

The VP is first in line. She's second. The president isn't "in line" -- he's already president

God knows we've done horrible things to these kids, and it's nice to have a speaker who will consider them.

It seems that other than fetuses, the Republicans are very disinterested future generations as are doing everything in the power to leave them with nothing.
