Pelosi asks Trump to reschedule State of the Union address
Source: Politico
Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday asked President Donald Trump to reschedule his State of the Union address or deliver it in writing as long as the government remains shut down.
"Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th," Pelosi wrote in a letter to Trump.

(989 posts)I think that she was worried that he would just cancel it. She knows that he will do the opposite of what she asks.
I think that she wants him to make a fool of himself.

You DO NOT reward OR reinforce bad behavior of any kind! ANY responsible parent can understand that.

(9,888 posts)actually be working for the good of the country. It could be very destabilizing if he were to cancel it, both here and abroad. This way she either goads him into doing it, or "they" reschedule it, which is a little less scary seeming since there's an adult involved with the decision. I can't imagine a State of the Union in the current situation, and I don't mean security.

(1,279 posts)but the Democrats will make sure that everyone knows that the backdrop he uses is not the Capitol Building and the paid men and women, most of whom are not really members of Congress. Also make sure people know that his State of the Union speech does not have to be made in person, but can just be a written document sent to Congress and this was not his idea.

(57,425 posts)Facing Trumps tantrum, Pelosi takes away the TV
By Jennifer Rubin

To say House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has mastered the art of dealing with President Trump would be a gross understatement. She fact-checked him in the Oval Office on live TV and passed spending bills to reopen the government, thereby reinforcing Trumps responsibility for the shutdown. To top it off, shes taking away the presidents TV. More precisely, in response to Trumps nearly month-long temper tantrum, she has told him he wont get his prime-time State of the Union address on Jan. 29.
....
Meanwhile, Trumps overall approval rating is a puny 37 percent. Trumps support among Republicans and Republican leaners remains high (80% approve), while nearly all Democrats and Democratic leaners (96%) disapprove of his job performance. The partisan gap in Trumps job approval is wider than for any president in more than six decades.
In short, Pelosi has the full support of her party and a sizable majority of the country behind her. Unlike Trump, many dont view the wall as a dire issue, but 58 percent do see the shutdown as a very serious matter.
We dont know how this will end, but should the shutdown create a serious safety hazard or take a big chunk out of the economy, there is little doubt whos going to get the blame. And Pelosi knows it.

(57,425 posts)Your periodic reminder Woodrow Wilson was just awful.
Thomas Jefferson ended tradition of a President delivering annual message to Congress in person because he thought it seemed too monarchical. (Woodrow Wilson resumed it.)
