GOP Congressman Jason Smith tells Democrat 'Go back to Puerto Rico' on House floor

Source: Grit Post

Rep. Jason Smith (R-Missouri) has been identified as the Republican Congressman who told Rep. Tony Cardenas (D-California) to ‘go back to Puerto Rico’ during a debate on the House floor.

According to The Hill, Jason Smith shouted at Cardenas in the midst of a chaotic procedural debate on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday.

While the Missouri Republican tried to suggest that he was referring to House Democrats’ recent trip to Puerto Rico and that the comment was directed at all Democratic members of the House, Cardenas, a Hispanic man who was born and raised in Los Angeles, disagreed.

“Since I was a little boy I’ve heard that blurted at me many times,” Cardenas told The Hill. “But it’s sad that anything even remotely close to that would be said to me on the floor of the House.”

these idiots out of office a long time ago but they've rigged the system and gerrymandered districts to their liking. Making it almost impossible to get democratic nominees voted in. At least this idiot will stand out as an idiot and stupid member of the republican caucus from MO. A true shame and not reflective of all Missourian values, believe me.

to deal w/ the statewide republicans (as we all know, being MO residents) who have ignored the will of Missouri voters in some things, such as the statewide measure that addressing puppy mill abuses, and our charming MO state legislature then passed an law repealing that measure and setup some 'standards' instead. Nice! Ignore what the voters wanted.

Other abuses also include telling us (as Missourians) to when the word 'meat' can be used, which I think is way too much regulation into our lives and they shouldn't be telling Missouri voters what they can or can not do in things of this nature. Before long, they'll be telling us when we can or can not use a word, and how to use it.
Ignorant and impacts my freedom of speech. Let the free markets determine this, not state government. If consumers are misled by the word 'meat' in packaging of products, then don't buy it. Keep government out of this. Before long, they'll be into all sorts of areas because they don't like something.

When the president of the United States is too stupid to know that Puerto Rico is part of the US, why would we expect his ignorant supporters to know better? Far too many people of color have been told to go back to Africa when we all know that many of them have an estors who were brought here in the 1700s and 1800s. Hispanics of Mexican or Puerto Rican descent also have every right to be here. I’m really, really fed up with this attitude of white superiority, and to have it displayed blatantly by an elected representative “of the people” is just disgusting.

As a former resident of the State of Missouri I can say without a doubt that this district comprises the biggest bunch of ignorant, backward-thinking yokels you would ever have the misfortune to meet. They excel at voting against their own best interests, to the point that that entire portion of the state is a cesspool of puppy mills and meth manufactories because there is no other way to make a living in that area. If I had to drive through there I would make sure I had a full tank of gas and enough food so I didn't have to stop.

It's much the same way you describe Missouri's 8th - with the exception of Ole Miss and the surrounding town of Oxford.

Oxford/Ole Miss is a relatively prosperous island in a sea of semi-rural backwardness because it's basically a pork barrel satellite, utterly dependent on the fedrul gummint.

The same gummint most voters there hate with a passion - except when it comes to war in heathen lands, of course.

There are many exceptions to these far-right sentiments, I should note. But most white voters just seem impervious.

And Republicans themselves set the tone as far back as 1981, when the infamous John Le Boutellier started referring to Democrats in terms like "idiot," "birdbrain," "scum," and, in Speaker Tip O'Neill's case, "old, fat, and out of control - just like the federal government."

O'Neill personally recruited NY Democrat Bob Mrazek to run against "the Boot" - who was very much given the boot in the '82 election and has never been seen or heard from again.
