Paul Ryan on Chicago teachers strike: ‘We stand with Rahm Emanuel’
Source: Yahoo News
Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan spoke out against the Chicago Teachers Union strike on Monday, saying he stands behind Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's opposition to the demonstration.
"Mayor Emanuel is right today in saying that this teacher's union strike is unnecessary and wrong," Ryan said in Portland, Ore., according to a pool report transcript. "We know that Rahm is not going to support our campaign, but on this issue and this day we stand with Mayor Rahm Emanuel."
More than 26,000 education professionals in the Chicago area did not attend work on Monday over a contract negotiation dispute with the Chicago Board of Education.
President Barack Obama's administration declined to comment on the strike. Emanuel, elected mayor in 2011, was Obama's chief of staff from 2009 to 2010.

This is why you support Organized Labor. And this punk likes Rage Against the Machine? Morello and De La Rocha would be out their WITH the teachers, rather than undercutting them.
Emmanuel's response to this? *crickets*

(384 posts)Wondering what R+R support, and don't support.
They support 41 kids in a classroom, no social services in schools for kids in need, don't support workers asking for sensible working conditions, support screwing public employee teachers who ask for decent working conditions and don't support productive working conditions for teachers who, by the tens of thousands, went on strike today, forfeiting their pay, teachers who are asking for an end to meaningless negotiations, a start of realistic negotiations after 10 months.
So what do R+R support? Meaningless public schooling? An end to public employee's rights to negotiate a contract, or simply an end to productive public schools as we know them? I think R+R are painting themselves into an untenable corner. Union disputes with teachers in Illinois will not decide this election, but it will decide the future of American kids. Which side are R+R on?

(4,802 posts)It is a reflection of Duncan's use of the failed No Child Left Behind policy . NCLB is a policy of failure. See Bush's x undersecretary of Education Diane Ravitch calling NCLB the robotatization of our children making education nothing more than education by rote memory , in turn as with our banks, turning education over to Wall Street. Meaning a give away plan turn turn education to for profit , schools.
. Note, many parents in Chicago are marching with teachers.. Turning schools over to for profit entities means parents have lost all control over their local schools...We have enough to agree with Obama on to vote for him. But, that does not mean he is without criticism..

(16,399 posts)....if a former Bush chief of staff was involved in a similar issue in '04, you wouldn't want to see some hay made of it?

(4,802 posts)Americans need to know.. The Bush's most crooked uncle, Neil . He added to his fortune ( after Silverado) by forming a company that published tests administered under the No Child Left Behind law.. NCLB is a shame turning American education into what Texas Republicans would love. No more critical thinking.. Just rote memorization.. Who needs thinking skills.. Just be a robot..
. Stand with the Chicago Teachers.. They are fighting to save local control and for critical thinking and to keep Wall Street out of the public schools..

(5,330 posts)There will be increasing pressure on Obama to weigh in on it, and if he sides with Rahm its going to lose him a lot of pro-union support.
Even refusing to take sides will look bad.
I just don't know how long Obama can avoid the elephant in the room.

(3,867 posts)Stand with the teachers because obviously they wouldn't be striking if they were be treated right and with the students because of the need for proper education. They should be standing against the Board and by associate Rahm.

(65,911 posts)I thought it was a mistake to have him for chief of staff, and he is wrong again here. Suddenly being tough when it comes to unions is what the DINOs do. Standing up for unions is not only right, but it beats back Repuke propaganda that makes even the middle class dislike unions. The propaganda has the middle class blaming unions for wanting more than they have, instead of the rich. If we more fairly distributed wealth, the poor and middle class would all benefit.
