Bernie Sanders set to announce 2020 presidential run
This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by DonViejo (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).
Source: Yahoo News
Three years after fighting a surprisingly competitive Democratic primary race against Hillary Clinton, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is making another run for the White House.
Two sources with direct knowledge of his plans told Yahoo News that Sanders, an independent and self-described democratic socialist, plans to announce his presidential bid imminently. While Sanders has been mulling a bid for months, one of the sources said he was emboldened by early polls of the race that have consistently showed him as one of the top candidates in a crowded Democratic primary field. In particular, the source said Sanders was heartened to see numbers indicating he is one of the leading candidates among African American and Latino voters, two groups he was perceived as struggling with in 2016.
The source also alluded to a spate of recent polls that show Sanders as the most popular politician in the country. They attributed Sanders strength in the polls to the base and name recognition he built with the prior presidential bid.
What the senator has this time that he didnt have last time is he is the most popular elected official in the country right now, the source said. Thats light years away from 2016 when very few people knew who he was.

(130,516 posts)I supported him during the 2016 primaries, but he had his chance and it's over; he's become too divisive. 2020 will be nothing like 2016 - there were no other strong alternatives to Clinton then so he was able to attract people who were looking for a more progressive candidate. But this time there are already plenty of people who can advance the same principles, and even more effectively. Bernie should stay in the Senate where he is still doing useful things. I don't think he'll go very far this time.
Chemisse

(7,596 posts)I'm sick of their generation. They've dominated the presidency almost entirely since 1993. 26 fucking years ago and the vast majority of my life. The fact that two of the worst presidents of all time have come from their generation has not given me a favorable impression of them over all. I think this country needs to move on from them. They represent the past and not the future.
I'm not saying they should get off the stage completely, but their days of being considered viable presidential candidates needs to end. I would definitely not support anyone born on or before December 31, 1949 in a primary. It's time for younger generations to get their chance.

(67,782 posts)....being a hyperlink.
Know what that links to? An article from AUGUST 2017. Recent, really? And that year and a half polls they reference is the overly debunked "Harvard Harris Poll" which only gave respondents a choice of about a dozen "politicians" (some of whom aren't even politicians!).
It should also be noted that the poll has a major disclaimer, "Results were weighted for age within gender, region, race/ethnicity, marital status, household size, income, employment, and education" (i.e., manipulated by the pollster)
The ONLY choices of "politicians" were:
Donald Trump
Hillary Clinton (out of politics)
Bernie Sanders
Mike Pence
Paul Ryan (out of politics)
Nancy Pelosi
Elizabeth Warren
Mitch McConnell
Jeff Sessions (out of politics)
Stephen Bannon (out of politics)
Chuck Schumer
Rex Tillerson 1274 (out of politics)
No mention of Kamala Harris, Beto O'Rourke, Joe Biden, Tulsi Gabbard, Pete Buttigieg, Kirsten Gillibrand, Julian Castro, and others.
If he's basing his candidacy on this poll (as indicated in the linked article), he's in for a huge surprise.
