Sen. Sherrod Brown says he could defeat President Donald Trump in Ohio and New York in 2020, even though he won't say if he's running for president yet.
"I would say that I will beat Trump in Ohio, where they know me best. I'll beat him in my home state and I'll beat him in his home state of New York, where they know him best," the Ohio Democrat told Van Jones on CNN's "The Van Jones Show," airing Saturday at 7 p.m. ET.
Brown said he is still weighing a presidential bid with his family and said he likes the diversity and energy in an increasingly crowded Democratic field. He is going on a listening tour about "the dignity of work" in four early primary states.
"Too many national Democrats think that we either speak to the progressive base or you speak to the workers," Brown said. "When in fact, it's not an either-or, you got to do both."

(16,159 posts)I love his voice. I could listen to his for four or eight years. Can't listen to The Orange One (thank the goddess for a mute button), couldn't listen to Dubyah. Barack, Bill both good voices. With good intellects behind that voice and something valuable to say.
I like Brown's message too.
I'm looking forward to this primary - let's have some positive solid debates about policy and moving this country forward out of the abyss.

(4,858 posts)...the hair, the rumpled clothes, the raspy voice. Could you imagine him in a debate with Trump, turning towards Forest Trump and saying, "oh, Mr President...one more thing..."

(8,385 posts)He has a long record of speaking for unions and workers...I might recommend a new hair person though

(2,580 posts)Brown voted against the bankruptcy bill, crime bill & Iraq War. Understood & opposed the anti worker, anti democracy, anti environ (eg. ISDS ) NAFTA & TPP, lifetime F from the NRA and has always stood for universal healthcare.

(19,156 posts)I don't think there were any other 2020 Dems who cosponsored. Bernie Sanders did. But I will not support Bernie in the primary, no way, at least not as long as there are any reasonable alternatives, and right now there are a bunch.

(11,949 posts)I figured if he could win re-election in Ohio he would be our best choice as he would curb stomp trump. And he is very liberal. Dont love his trade policy but Ohio...
Team him with Harris or Booker and it would be a landslide.

(5,778 posts)Probably not in Ohio. I thought Hillary should have chosen Sherrod Brown as her VP

(13,005 posts)No slight on Tim Kaine's qualifications, but I don't think he got her a single state she wouldn't have gotten anyway. Brown might have, at least swung Ohio, plus he'd have helped shore up the less enthusiastic support for the ticket from the more progressive/Sanders wing. It might have helped Hillary to have thrown more of a bone in that direction. I don't think Kaine really bought her anything in terms of strengthening the ticket. I think he was instead a safe choice for someone who never seriously entertained any likelihood of losing, and so a possible miscalculation.

(93,615 posts)but the problem was the Russian attack and Comey and im not sure brown would have helped much either.

(19,156 posts)He's exactly right about the need to include progressive values AND worker's concerns. I have been saying the exact same thing.

(1,882 posts)That and the fact that I like/respect him and his positions on issues makes Sherrod Brown my likely first choice in the primaries, if he runs. I think Sherrod Brown/Kamala Harris could be a very successful ticket.

The line
"I would say that I will beat Trump in Ohio, where they know me best. I'll beat him in my home state and I'll beat him in his home state of New York, where they know him best,"
Deserves to be shared, and remembered, but this is not a breaking news event of national interest
