Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) says he is close to deciding whether to run for president in 2020.
"I'm close to making a decision. I'll be in New Hampshire tomorrow, so I'm excited for that," Swalwell told CNN on Wednesday.
Swalwell has previously said he's considering a bid, telling MSNBC last month that he could "see a path" to the Democratic nomination.
If the California Democrat were to enter the race, he would join a primary field that already has several candidates. Sens. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), as well as former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro, have all launched bids or presidential exploratory committees.

I attended a reception with him last week. He has a compelling speaking style; not sure how he'll do with rally crowds.

(1,588 posts)He needs to lose that Cheshire cat smile. It seems that no matter what subject he's talking about in an interview, he always goes back to that sly little smile, like he knows something that we don't. He makes me feel like he knows this is all an act and he's young, and he's proud that he's been picked to be in on the game. Even when the subject is something that he should be mad as hell about, he always goes back to that wry little smile. There's just something there that seems odd to me... I don't know, probably just me...

(37,648 posts)I'm interested in hearing about him, but with Harris, another CA Democrat, already in, and she seems popular at this stage, I don't know about his chances.

(44,586 posts)I'm really impressed by him and his leadership especially on the Trussia issue.
Don't see him taking the nomination as a House member, but I could eventually see him or Schiff running for a Senate seat whenever Feinstein decides to hang it up.

(5,776 posts)He is young-enough that he will still have that option later.
And we need him where he is for now.

(42,862 posts)... maybe he's thinking of a trial-run now, in preparation for something in the future. It certainly wouldn't be the first time.

(21,289 posts)I don't know a lot about him. Does he have an area of expertise/passion that would make him well suited for a cabinet position?
For example, Beto O'Rourke is passionate about the failed drug war and even wrote a book about it. I could definitely see him as a new and improved "drug czar" who would go after the pharmaceutical opiate peddlers, decriminalize marijuana, set up programs to help drug addicts get treatment instead of going to prison, etc.
