WASHINGTON Andrew G. McCabe, the former deputy F.B.I. director, said in an interview aired on Thursday that top Justice Department officials were so alarmed by President Trumps decision in May 2017 to fire James B. Comey, the bureaus director, that they discussed whether to recruit cabinet members to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Mr. Trump from office.
The concerns about the presidents actions also prompted Mr. McCabe to order the bureaus team investigating Russias election interference to expand their scope to also investigate whether Mr. Trump had obstructed justice by firing Mr. Comey. They also were to examine if he had been working on behalf of Russia against American interests.
Mr. McCabes remarks were made in an interview on 60 Minutes scheduled to air on Sunday. He was promoting his memoir, The Threat: How the F.B.I. Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump, which will be released next week.
Mr. McCabe said he spoke to Mr. Trump just after Mr. Comey was fired, and the next day he met with the team investigating Russias election interference.

(11,495 posts)Invoking the 25th amendment is that trump put people in his cabinet, or should I say crooks, that would never go along with it. He hand picked the "scum" from the bottom of the "swamp" to do his bidding, and make sure the 25th wouldn't be an option for those who see how terrible the trump presidency really is.

(70,581 posts)Sooner or later they will have to flip on Trump or go down in history as traitors to
their own country. The republican dam against the flood waters of Trump/Russia
can only hold out so long. Even some of the GOP who took Russian/NRA money
will have to turn on Trump in order to save their skins.

(52,317 posts)well, removal of any president capable of talking.
it's rhetorically fun to talk about removing a president via the 25th amendment, but it's actually *much* more difficult than even impeachment.
- it requires 2/3 of the house instead of 1/2
- it requires the vice-president
- it requires a majority of the cabinet -- a group of cronies who would be the last to turn on donnie.
and it also requires the same 2/3 of the senate that impeachment requires.
not that it requires everything impeachment requires *and* his inner circle to turn on him.
removal via the 25th was intended for a president in a coma, or so incapacitated by a stroke or something that he physically can't carry out the duties of the office.
it was meant to be used only when it was *obvious even to a president's own supporters*.

(42 posts)I keep hearing that removal via the 25th is virtually impossible because it is intended for an incapacitated president. You are the first to fully explain it.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Thursday threatened to subpoena deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to make him answer questions about discussions in the Department of Justice about ousting President Donald Trump in 2017.
Id like to know what happened, Graham said, according to Fox News reporter Jason Donner. Youre having a conversation about whether or not youre gonna invoke the 25th Amendment I would imagine if the shoe were on the other foot my Democratic colleagues would want to know about that conversation if it involved a Democrat.
. . .
Former deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe on Thursday revealed that the DOJ in May 2017 had discussions about recruiting Vice President Mike Pence and other members of Trumps cabinet to invoke the 25th amendment and declare that the president is unable to discharge his duties as outlined in the United States Constitution.
According to 60 Minutes reporter Scott Pelley, McCabe says that DOJ officials were counting noses in the White House about which cabinet officials would most likely agree with their plan to remove Trump, although they never formally asked any cabinet members to invoke the 25th amendment.
