Florida Republican lawmaker apologized for repeatedly referring to pregnant women as host bodies during a television interview.
House Speaker José Oliva used the phrase host bodies multiple times during an interview Thursday with WFOR-TV, but he issued a statement the following day to apologize for using the term during a discussion on abortion, reported the Miami Herald.
I apologize for having caused offense, my aim was the contrary, Oliva said. This is and will continue to be our societies [sic] greatest challenge. I strongly believe both mother and child have rights and the extent and balance of those rights remain in question. I regret my wording has distracted from the issue. My apologies to all.
The Miami Lakes Republican said he was trying to use terminology found in medical ethics writings with the purpose of keeping the discussion dispassionate.

(519 posts)As technology moves along, a human body can exist outside of its host body earlier and earlier, and so then one has to think, until what time does the host body have veto power over this other life? The question is: What is the value of that life? And is it subordinate to the value of its host body?
So there are human bodies and host bodies!

(56,198 posts)Calling it "medical ethics writings" is merely trying to hide the fact that the term "host bodies" displays a galling dismissal of any ethical consideration for a pregnant woman.
Treating her as a mere incubator is not "dispassionate", it's callous cruelty and betrays a fundamental contempt for other people.

(12,541 posts)The World over, HALF the human population are considered less than human. They are instead considered mere vessels; incubators; host bodies to incubate male seed; male service units. This entire attitude is what rape culture, and the patriarchy that is hellbent on denying women full agency of their own bodies and full reproductive health care is perched upon.
