MOST REPUBLICANS WOULDN'T SUPPORT DONALD TRUMP'S IMPEACHMENT EVEN IF MUELLER PROVES HE ACCEPTED RUSS
Source: Newsweek
Most Republicans wouldn't support impeaching President Donald Trump, even if special counsel Robert Mueller found that the billionaire worked with Russia to get elected president in 2016, a new poll released this week found.
A survey from YouGov/The Economist asked respondents if they would "support or oppose Congress beginning the impeachment process if Special Counsel Robert Mueller found" a number of different things, among them that "Donald Trump accepted Russian assistance during the 2016 presidential campaign." That would effectively amount to the collusion allegations that Trump has repeatedly swatted away as untrue.
But most Republicans would not want the president to be impeached, even if Trump did accept Russia's help. Sixty-three percent of GOP respondents said they opposed impeachment in that situation, while just 18 percent supported it and 19 percent weren't sure.
And most of the GOP also wouldn't want Trump to be impeached if Mueller found he obstructed justice. Sixty-two percent of Republicans said they opposed impeachment in that case, while 18 percent supported it and 20 percent were not sure.

If you remember he was pro-choice BEFORE he ran for the WH. Then, he said that MDs and women who sought termination "should be punished" and then his poll numbers shot up because the religious freaks lost their minds.

Moscow Mitch won't let anything on the floor that Fat Donnie disapproves of. The Russians haven't stopped messing with our election system in favor of Trump and against the Democrats.
I will give Fat Donnie this -- he's a survivor. He has put into place layer upon layer of protection. He really is like a mob boss. I'm starting to agree with Cohen when he says that even if he loses in 2020, Trump is not moving out of the WH willingly. He probably figures that if he can hang on to the presidency until January 2025, even if he's indicted he has enough money -- and judges in his pocket -- to drag it out until he dies.
Manafort proved that the rules of justice are different if you are white and rich. He's been playing by Trump's playbook, and I imagine he's looking at a pardon after next week's sentencing. Trump keeps saying how unfairly Manafort's been treated, and that's what he has said about every person he has pardoned so far.

Republican support evaporated, and we didn't even have to impeach him-- the threat of impeachment sent him packing.
Current polls are meaningless. I don't know where the tipping point is, but we are so far along that something is bound to hit the public and doom Trump.
Welcome President Pence, who, while bad enough, will still be relief from the chaos of Trump. And it's tough see him being re-elected in 2020.

(14 posts)Much has happened since the Nixon Days. People still had values in the 70s. Now they've disappeared. Yes Trump could kill somebody on 5th Avenue, he could nuke the whole East Coast and the Republicans would still back him. 20 women have accused him of Rape. No Investigations no nothing. He IS above the law. There's one and only one way we can take back America. STOP VOTING FOR POLITICIANS BACKED BY CORPORATE LOBBYISTS!

(20,482 posts)is that there are fewer of these so-called "republicans" (actually they're the Cult of Trump) every day. All of the "honest" republicans (if such a thing exists) have abandoned, or are currently abandoning the cult. All of these so-called "republicans" are not enough to elect Trump to a second term. Trump would still need millions of independents and disgruntled "democrats" to elect him to a second term. He may have fooled them with his "what have you got to lose" bullshit in 2016, but now they know what they have to lose!
This is not the old republican party responding to this poll. This is the Cult of Trump responding to this poll. Fuck them. They're losers, just like their cult leader, and they haven't a snowball's chance in hell of getting the orange hemorrhoid re-elected by themselves, or even with Russia's influence. If Russia is allowed to hack the vote totals though........all bets are off.

need 67 Senate votes to convict. Impeach without them & he's stronger. With what we know now, any other person would be impeached and convicted.
it looks like Trump needs to have a live pay-per-view event where he performs a late-term abortion and has gay sex on camera - maybe, then, Republicans will consider convicting him.
Fiendish Thingy
(23,020 posts)No definitive proof that Trump would be stronger if he survived a trial in the senate. People keep comparing a potential Trump impeachment to Clinton's, when it should be Nixon- Trumps crimes are far worse than Nixon's, and a year of investigations and impeachment hearings leading to the primaries could do a lot of damage, and maybe scare enough Republican senators to supporting removal.
We must push ahead slowly, steadily to make the Unignorable case for Trump's removal, using all of Meuller's evidence, then gathering more via congress. No hand wringing or pearl clutching, just relentless presentation of facts to shift the narrative so that by this time next year, removal will clearly be the right thing to do.

(13,459 posts)According to the Pew Research Center, over 70% of people in this country are Christians, with just over 25% of that number being evangelicals, who make up most of Trumps support. The percentage of people who identify as Christian has declined over the years, and Republicans have been clever at exploiting the fear of the US not being a Christian nation, the fear of minorities outnumbering white people, and the resentment of what they perceive as government overreach in extending legal rights to LGBT and allowing abortion. I remember a Republican candidate in 2018 claiming that people should vote for him because his opponent did not believe in God since he was a Democrat.
Many Republican voters have convinced themselves that God is on their side and that keeping Republicans in office is more important than following the rule of law or ethics or normal behavior. Thus, it is okay to lie, cheat, and steal because those actions serve the greater good of forcing everyone else to abide by their religious beliefs. Fortunately, the entire 70% of those who affiliate as Christians does not follow those beliefs, but far too many people do and we ignore what they will do to win at our peril.

We shouldn't shy away from impeachment because it's unpopular or we don't have the numbers in the Senate, we should strive to make the Unignorable case for impeachment, using all of Meuller's evidence, as well as evidence gathered by congressional investigations.

(4,537 posts)Apparently, Republican followers and those who voted for this idiot truly dont give a shit about our founding principles, the bedrock that made this country the envy of the world. They are blind to the fact that in two short years, we have raced toward Autocracy, and they relish in the fact that dirty water and dirty air is good, that happily giving your money to those who need it the least is sacrosanct,,,,,,blah, blah, blah.
I find it hard to fathom that we have sunk to this point. Putin just passed legislation that makes it a CRIME to criticize him in the open - press, demonstrations, etc. it is basically an open infringement on whatever kind of press or individual freedoms(?) they have in Russia. The Asshole In Chief tells his ill-informed followers to trust that only he will take care of them. Really, how stupid can you be?
Were on a razors edge, and its the stupid people that voted for him and the insipid Republican Party who are 100% to blame (and the fricking electoral college). The acrimony between the parties is only getting worse. We continue to find more and more reason to hate each other. Im not a religious person, but I pray for our country that somehow we can get past this black chapter in our history and back to whatever revised picture of society will be created from the rubble.
