Former vice president Cheney challenges Pence at private retreat, compares Trumps foreign policy to Obamas approach
Robert Costa, Ashley Parker 6 hrs ago
A chummy discussion between Vice President Pence and former vice president Richard B. Cheney quickly turned into a vigorous back-and-forth over President Trumps foreign policy at a private gathering Saturday, with Cheney comparing the presidents instincts to those of his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama, according to a transcript obtained by The Washington Post.
At the closed-door retreat hosted by the American Enterprise Institute in Sea Island, Ga., Cheney respectfully but repeatedly and firmly pressed Pence on a number of the presidents foreign policy moves. Cheney expressed concerns at such actions as taking a harder line toward U.S. allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and deciding to withdraw troops from Syria during what he fretted was the middle of a phone call.
Cheney also worried aloud to Pence that were getting into a situation when our friends and allies around the world that we depend upon are going to lack confidence in us and then offered a blunt criticism of the current administrations response to foreign policy challenges.
I worry that the bottom line of that kind of an approach is we have an administration that looks a lot more like Barack Obama than Ronald Reagan, he said.

(9,445 posts)Our allies never had to question whether or not we would be there for them if something happened. President Obama never tried to cozy up to dictators. President Obama never elevated the leader of North Korea. President Obama might have gotten a better deal from the North Korean leader without having to meet with him publicly. President Obama was never swayed by a leader saying nice thing about him. Dick Cheney wishes Donald Trump ran foreign policy as well as President Obama.

I could never figure out when the neocons would realize that they have little in common with the christofascists their party courted. The fact that neocon extraordinaire John Bolton is not only still there, but is uttering what amounts to anti-neocon rhetoric, was maybe enough to finally prompt Darth to object.
