Mulvaney: only 'something dramatic' will stop Trump closing Mexico border

Move could have severe consequences for US economy
US citizens who cross border for work or family fear hardship

..........................................

At the border, those who frequently cross between countries for work or family reasons worried about the impact on their lives.

A surge of migrants from Central America has increased pressure on border ports of entry, leading to controversy over the way such people are held and treated.

.....................................................

White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney told ABC’s This Week the president had few other options in the absence of support from Democrats for more border security or legislative action to change immigration law.

“Faced with those limitations, the president will do everything he can,” Mulvaney said. “If closing the ports of entry means that, that’s exactly what he intends to do. We need border security and we’re going to do the best we can with what we have.”

April was probably based on the time needed for Trump to create a scandal big enough to knock the report off the front pages. This might do it.

As if anything the Democrats do could "cause" Trump to close the border. More like he's going to do that and try to blame the Democrats.

He already got the National Emergency to steal money from other federal budget items for his wall and such, didn't he? That's on top of the already generous budget for the border. If he can't do it with all that, he's the one with the problem. But nothing is ever his fault. The buck stops...anywhere but with him.

who are coming in at points of entry, forcing them to stay in Mexico ... but for some reason he cannot do this (legally?), so he has to close the whole thing, if anything?

The only positive thing (in his mind) that a full closure accomplishes is keeping refugees out of the US, where they legally (I'd imagine) must be processed and housed, so ...

But this is going to massively screw up the economy, and piss of a LOOOOOOOT of business owners and Wall Street.

As such I rather doubt he's going to do so.

Mexico, however, may not be able to risk it, and may decide to do as they're being extorted into doing.

It would cost their country a TON of money though because it basically would mean they have to set a 'mirror' of our Border checkpoints, where authorities would filter everyone trying to pass ... and only those with a right to go to the USA ... to proceed through to our checkpoints. Basically doing the USA's job for us.

The delays this will cause to get through northward to the USA will be insane as you'll be stopped twice.
