Omar reports more death threats against her since Trump tweet
Source: AP
Rep. Ilhan Omar says she's faced increased death threats since President Trump spread around a video that purports to show her being dismissive of the 2001 terrorist attacks. "This is endangering lives," the Minnesota Democrat said in a statement Sunday night, accusing Trump of fomenting right-wing extremism. "It has to stop." Her statement followed an announcement by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that she has taken steps to ensure the safety of Omar, and the speaker's call for Trump to take down the video. Soon after Pelosi's statement, the video disappeared as a pinned tweet at the top of Trump's Twitter feed, but it was not deleted. Read more: https://www.mprnews.org/story/2019/04/14/pelosi-trump-tweet-omar-video "Updated: 10:05 p.m. Posted: 7:45 p.m." (Central Time) Later in the article, she said "a sharp increase" in threats on her life. It's an MPRNews link, but the top of the story says it is an Associated Press story. I'm blanking out, but I've been trying to think all day of the last time some congress person (representative or senator) was ever this much targeted with death threats and hostility. I can't think of anything like this in my 60+ year lifetime, but perhaps there was something like this in the darkest part of the civil right struggle. Before that, probably in the lead-up to the civil war. But like I say, I probably have a blank spot. I'm leaving aside congress people who were running for president, I'm sure Bobby Kennedy also had a ton of death threats (and assassinated). ========================================= Edited to add: she's my congresswoman. So I've kind of felt under attack too, sort of a siege mentality on my part, watching all this day after day for, what, 3 months now.

1. I don't remember *any* time when a president incited violence against a member of Congress.
Even presidents I didn't like at all - Nixon, Reagan, the Bushes - didn't make implicitly violent public statements against any of the opposing party's members of Congress.

18. We have to assume his fans and vast majority of Congressional Repugs are OK with Trumps dangerous
comments. I really do not know what it would take for them to be outraged at this point.

Every single goddamn day WITHOUT FAIL there are multiple "I don't remember *any* time when a president _________!!" moments, and I truly hate it.

2. Nothing better happen to her, or Trump should be charged with reckless endangerment.
Try and tell the public that he can get away with that and see what happens. Twitter should suspend this account asap. This man is dangerous.

10. Yeah right,
Trump was the inspiration for the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting and the New Zealand Mosque shootings.
Trump looks upon his attacks on people of color and different religions as a win for him politically. He doesn't give a shit if people die because of his words as long as his base approves. Maybe some Democrats can also stop bashing Ilhan Omar and AOC? |

3. Watching from Australia
with great interest.
I've got to wonder at the pork barrelling, hate spreading and fear mongering in US politics. And the brainless idiots who want to act out, with physical violence, their objections to the abstract happenings in politics. We have an election on the 18th of May. Some elements of American style rumour, fear and hatred generation appearing at the moment. I hope we can fight it. Focus on the policies, rather than personalities. And work out which political promises are realistic and which are sucker bait. American style politics. It's not something for the politics of any country to aspire to. |

12. How do you know 1/3 of our voting population is stupid?
Who owns our voting machines? When was one of our voting machines pulled out and independently audited?
Democrats work hard to get out the vote and then let Republican owned machines count the votes. Wisconsin comes to mind; no way that state has fair elections. I vote in Pa. and ever since we went to electronic machines I have asked for a paper receipt and have never been given one. I vote into a black hole. If we ever go back to paper ballots a lot of people's eyes are going to be opened to what has been going on. |

27. Nobody owns the polls & that thing has a consistent approval rating of 34-40% depending.
It's not all voting machines. The voting machines couldn't have been flipped if the election was so one-sided.

It's a good cop bad cop routine. MSNBC and CNN only put a liberal slant to a right wing talking point.

26. tRump, when asked if he had any second thoughts on the video after reports of increased threats...
Replied, "No, not at all".
If he has no regrets, then this is intentional hate speech, intended to incite violence against a sitting member of Congress. Link to tweet ?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1118120413895196672&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.democraticunderground.com%2F100212016932 |

30. And trump and the fascist gop
Just thought the Mid Terms were bad for them. Inciting threats against a member of Congress because of race and religion , and because she's a woman, shows how trump and the gop have embraced hate groups, fascism , and fear as a weapon to use and still deny their involvement, or accountability. 2020 will stop this from continuing when they are all voted out of office. trump and the gop are a international disgrace, and they will regret this.
