Dissident republicans are being blamed for killing 29-year-old Lyra McKee during rioting after police searches in Derry's Creggan area on Thursday night.
Petrol bombs were also thrown at police Land Rovers.
Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton said the police were "treating the shooting as a terrorist incident" and a murder inquiry had been launched.
There are reports that the trouble broke out after police raids on houses in the Mulroy Park and Galliagh areas.

Ms McKee was standing near a police 4x4 vehicle with other journalists when she was wounded.
CCTV captured her final moments in the crowd and mobile phone footage showed the suspected gunman.

(101,270 posts)For the latter, publicity - they wanted to be on MTV:
A radicalised 18-year-old New IRA gunman murdered writer Lyra McKee in a desperate bid to impress an MTV documentary crew filming young dissidents in Derry City.
Popular presenter and DJ Reggie Yates had been on the Creggan estate for several days recording hardline republicans for his upcoming Reggie Yates vs The World series.
...
The New IRA responded to Thursday's pre-emptive PSNI searches by sending teenagers to riot at Fanad Drive, knowing full well that MTV cameras would capture the violence. A bewildered Reggie Yates was pictured at the scene as the trouble unfolded.
In a propaganda effort that has now backfired spectacularly, a baby-faced young gunman was ordered by New IRA chiefs onto the streets. He was filmed clutching a handgun and firing several shots from behind a wall across a burning car at a PSNI vehicle.
