Mnuchin due to give Democrats a response on Trump's tax returns
Source: CNN
(CNN) After two missed deadlines, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is again due to tell House Democrats on Monday whether he plans to hand over President Donald Trump's personal tax returns.
A person familiar with Mnuchin's thinking told CNN to expect Trump's top finance chief, a close ally of the President, to ultimately reject the initial April 3 request from House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal to release six years of Trump's personal returns. It's unclear whether that denial would come on Monday or at a later point, the person said.
The fight is escalating as Trump has made increasingly clear that he expects his administration officials to fight requests from the opposing party.
... snip ...
Democrats initially directed their request to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig, the only person with the legal authority to turn over the returns, but Mnuchin has interceded twice in the matter, citing his role overseeing the federal tax collector.

(345 posts)It just struck me that republicans have gone from obstruction of the legal sort, such as endless stalling through congressional procedure throughout the Obama administration, to obstruction of the illegal sort, completely ignoring what is clearly the law.
Not that I didn't already know it, but this makes it irrefutably clear that republicans place themselves and their agenda above the law. And anything that could derail their agenda, even something that should be inconsequential like public scrutiny of the president's financial obligations, will be oppposed by all means necessary, legal or not.
The "party of law and order".

My bet. We wait to see the results in November 2020.

(11,088 posts)When they did it to Eric Holder, he was forced to provide the thousands of documents to the rethugs. It will be a hard sell at this point to avoid providing anything to the house, including tax returns.
